What is brake fluid and why is it important? Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid used in a vehicles brake system. A brake circuit has fluid filled cylinders connected by pipes. When you push the brake pedal the brake fluid moves along the pipes to each wheel forcing brake application. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. The fluid attracts moisture through pores in rubber hoses and seals. Corrosion inhibitors are added ...to the fluid to protect against contaminates as moisture enters the system. The corrosion inhibitors in brake fluid degrade over time. Degraded inhibitors along with the presence of excessive water cause corrosion in the braking system. To maintain hydraulic pressure, expel metal contaminants and replenish corrosion inhibitors a brake fluid exchange should be performed at regular service intervals.
