Why we say NO to any form of palm oil here at JoJo-V. Palm oil is not required to make effective skin care products or food and so we do not need to contribute to it’s disastrous effects on orangutans. While we could purchase Palm Oil from ethically sourced farms, we choose not to add extra expense to our ingredient list unnecessarily. Here is what is happening because of Palm Oil production:... Over the last decade the wild orangutan population has decreased 50% due to habitat loss and the killing of these beautiful animals when they get in the way of deforestation workers. They once thrived in Indonesia’s lush, green rainforests but over the last 50 years they have been forced from their home and killed. In the last 16 years alone, 100,000 Bornean orangutans have been lost. All three species Bornean, Sumatran and the Tapanuli, are now on the critically endangered list. Orangutans spend 95% of their lives in the trees, but right now, Indonesia’s forests are disappearing at the rate of one football field every 25 seconds. Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world, having even surpassed soya in terms of usage. This demand for palm oil has fueled massive forest destruction throughout Indonesia and Malaysia, countries that together account for 85% of the world’s palm oil production. Palm oil is commonly found in food and is also extensively used in cosmetics and toiletries and in the manufacturing of soaps, shampoos, detergents, and toothpaste. The palm oil industry has been a disaster not only for endangered wildlife such as orangutans and tigers (in Sumatra) but has also created conflict with local communities over land rights.
