Just finished my first job in T.O.; Parkdale. (I didn't do the Mural). Saw my first couple of Meth-addicts, some Crack-addicts, lots of Zombies...wouldn't want to be there at night. Guess that's why he got me to put the bars on the windows.

It just followed me home....yeah, it was on a trailer.... but still... Who else will take care of an ugly old thing like this? Every one knows that a dog needs a home. I think she'll fit right in. Let's see how long it takes for the wife to notice.

Working on Manure Spreaders and Dump Truck jobs still help pay the bills but have lost some allure compared to this one. Shiny.

Now it needs forks. All kinda' rough looking but she'll lift 700 pounds before I lose traction on the back wheels. That's 600 more than I can lift; that'll do.

Starting to think ahead and realize that I'm not 18 anymore and I need some mechanical advantage. This is the latest augmentation. Cross between my '51 Massey Harris, some parts off of a Clark Forklift from the wreckers and an old John Deere Loader frame that I bought from a neighbour. No doubt this will only lead to more projects.

What the hell is it with me and snakes? Earth day and here's the first snake of spring, I guess. If this is the one that I saved back in January (Remember Janice?) she sure has lost a lot of weight. Good to see you Janice. I did say "see you in April, Janice"; and here she is. Good omens all around. Or, "Hey, there's a snake!"

Wake up one morning to find out Ol' Regirt has been acting like a regular 'Runaround Sue'. Who the hell is this Mack and what's he doing in my driveway?

How to fix your poo-slinger. Our farmers do get the most out of thier equipment.

So I spent (more time than I like to admit), proving that I was more stubborn than a block of Black Cherry. My wife's opinion; "I already knew that." Huh. I still think that she's impressed. I'm going in for an aspirin.

Glad that I paid attention in Sunday School arts and crafts. Also remember something about Jeebus and Wine and Fishing and Seven Days of Resting, but, that's about it.

47 years old and I'm still a procrastinator. "Maybe I should unload and cut this wood while I have the time. Nah, we're not going to get any weather tonight, do it tomorrow." Wake up this morning.....DAMMIT! Gotta' stop listening to that guy on my left shoulder so much and pay more attention to the guy on my right shoulder. And I certainly don't need the dog sayin' "I told Ya" !

This is a trailer from around 2002. It's a flat-bed but has the same frame as a covered trailer; like the ones contracters use. It was absolutely rotten and I had to rebuild everything but the tongue and axels. (lot of work with the gas-axe) The box steel that they use is light and 'just' adequate for the job, (Same as cars and trucks these days), but they're not getting any less expensive. This new steel frame oughta' last 2-3 times longer than the original. jmfabandrepair.com

Came home tonight and saw a big Garter Snake on the back door-step. I think that it may be the one that I see Early in the spring. Looked up names for Garter Snakes; got Zip, Striker,Wormser, Etc. It's a big one, the females are bigger, I think. So, I'll name her Janice. Well, Janice is dumb and got caught on some one's back door-step in January. Don't think that she liked having her picture taken during, either. I could throw her somewhere but I don't think that they like being frozen much more than we do. Tried to warm her up with a hair dryer, but even a bleeding-heart Liberal gets tired of that after 10 minutes or so. So, I set a trouble-light down and covered her with a welding blanket. Came back in an hour or two and she had scampered off. See you in April Janice. jmfabandrepair.com

The new truck, Re-Girt was a Pavement Princess. So much so that the first time that I needed the 4 wheel drive, I discovered that the linkage was siezed. (Had hardly been used). The engineers at Ford (no doubt with much input from the accountants) decided that a crappy plastic bushing was sufficient. Well I guess that it was for good enough until the warranty ran out. That's the name of the game these days; to hell with your company's reputation. Of course you can't buy parts, so I rebuilt the linkage to at least the standards that my '81 was built to. Had to use some Pathagorean Theorum, my 1942 Atlas Lathe and some copper plumbing supplies from Home Hardware. Also added a grease-zirk, (novel idea), so that the problem would never happen again. Seriously planning on getting the '81 back on the road as soon as possible.

Men have it good, in that, give 'em a tool and that counts as a present. (And it ain't even Christmas yet). Like most presents that I get, I usually get two left skates or no batteries, or what-ever. I had to upgrade my old 1942 Atlas to more modern tooling and, of course, it needed some modification. Go figure. With toys like these you have to have tools to make your tools work and they make you more work. Easier to buy new, I guess. Just have to find a way to make them pay for them-selves.

Well it finally came to the point where my old F150 (Girta) started to become too unreliable and I had to upgrade. The new one's giving me a rash. Not only do I have to take extra care because of her shiny paint and overall girly-ness; she gets worse mileage than the '81. And you could run a small car off of Girt's exhaust. Any way Girt is still the work horse around the farm so she'll be around for as long as that old straight-six mill keeps running. Here's the Work Horse and the Pavement Princess or Girt and Re-Girt, as my neighbour calls them. And Merry Christmas from the '51 Massey Harris. She hasn't told me her moniker yet.

Only pictures from last week's full moon. Here's Sampson and Lucy fearlessly protecting us from badgers and weasels. Thanks to their efforts we have been without any badger related fatalities in recent memory. Well worth the endless bags of Ol'Roy.

Man! I've been running the same equipment for years and years. It's old, it works, no bank loans and after 20-30 years, I have plenty of spare parts. Still, once in a while, you have to buy parts that wear out. Problem is, these parts are all made in Mexico or China. This $15 Transmission seal cost me 3 days of down-time. Two seals (made in Mexico) failed, ended up using one that I had hanging around from probably 20 years ago. We're cutting our own throats by letting the accountants determine our quality standards. Sorry if you're an accountant.

What a month; and it ain't even half over yet. Been in business for about a year now and I'm learning a lot about people and where they think that they fit in the big scheme of things. We should all spend more time in front of the mirror; and not those fun-house ones that make you look like Atlas. I prefer machines, they're easier to understand and fix. I can't find photos of a lot of stuff that I've been into. (All of the cool stuff of course). This is a humble conveyor roller that needed to be rebuilt. If it ain't rolling the production stops. Every cog in the machine is important. Things have been challenging but I'd still rather be a Morlok than an Eloi.

There's an expression in the trades that says "This is my price; if you're going to help; it's double." I finally realized the reason for that. Big job that started several years ago that I was hired to finish. I spent several months.... One day of maverick by a cavalier; two months delay. Who's reputation is it that suffers?... Certainly not what I would have placed my good name on either but I have done my best to correct it. Word to the wise... Stand your ground and never suffer fools lightly. See more
