5 months following the most devastating Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, our @balikproject team returned to be with our @streetlight_ph family to implement @mynameistrauma workshop. In the middle of the 4-day workshop, we decided to still have our annual Pagpasabot Self-Expression Festival as part of our healing process. My brother from another mother and best friend, Rob Boothe, is my long-time partner in crime in the group Rhythm Speaks and we decided to perform one of our go-to live beatbox/MC pieces in homage to MC Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh. Growing up, there weren’t many Hollywood stars that I could identify with. If you know me, then it goes without saying that @brucelee is of course one of my biggest influences as a visionary, martial artist, and performer on and off screen. However, you may not know that one of my heroes actually looked like me and represented my cultural identity and passions as a Filipino martial artist. This childhood movie star was not only someone I wanted to emulate but it was someone w...ho represented our culture, talents, and dreams. This gave me hope as an aspiring martial arts master, performer, and filmmaker. @erniereyesjr was not only a pioneer for Asian Americans in the entertainment industry but he represented Filipinos all over the world with pride. At an early age, he had roles in action films with @schwarzenegger had his own TV show with @disney and has starred in Hollywood films such as TMNT 1 & 2, Surf Ninjas, and made appearances in blockbuster hits with other stars such as @therock . His daughter @lotussblossomm is featured on @netflix @wecanbeheroesmovie and it is inspiring to see more and more diversity on the big screen. 11 years ago, I had the chance to meet Ernie in Vegas @ufc 100 and it was as if I was meeting my childhood hero. Today our family remembers and honours our Papa/Lolo Dr. Jose Zamora Rivero. I owe him and my mama Glo everything for the love, opportunities, and sacrifices they have provided for my brother @thefirstjoel and I. Though you became very sick when I was 2, you taught us the value of authenticity, faith, patience, and family until I was 19. Papa, today (and everyday) we honour you forever. 14 years ago I attended my first film festival in Edmonton and was moved by the inspiring stories carefully curated and selected by the panel. This experience lit a spark of curiosity for me to grow and explore my own cultural story and little did I know that I too would one day become a filmmaker.
