Over the past week we’ve been talking about the Feline Grimace Scale and have shared three images of different cats and asked you to identify whether they’re su...ffering from acute pain. The correct answers are shown below. How did you do? Identifying acute pain in cats isn’t easy, and we’re inviting you to take part in a study that could revolutionise how it’s recognised and treated, ultimately reducing suffering and distress for many cats. Researchers at the University of Montreal have developed the Feline Grimace Scale, which helps identify whether a cat is displaying signs of acute pain (https://www.felinegrimacescale.com/). This could help veterinary professionals identify when a cat is in pain and provide the necessary pain relief to limit suffering. They are looking for cat owners to complete an online survey in English or Spanish measuring how well they can identify acute pain. Participation is entirely anonymous, and involves reading a short manual with pictures and completing a questionnaire. The results could have hugely important consequences for feline acute pain assessment. The survey will be open from March 15th to May 15th, 2021. Follow the link below to take part. https://www.research.net/r/FGS2021 No cats were deliberately exposed to pain in the sourcing of these photos This study received an unrestricted grant from Zoetis and is being done in collaboration with the International Cat Care.

Thinking of buying or adopting a dog? It is important to be cautious when importing furry friends or using an online broker. We’re working with Friends of Huma...ne Society International, Humane Canada, the Canadian Kennel Club, and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to help Canadians make informed decisions when considering a new canine family member. Adopting from a reputable rescue organization or buying from an accountable Canadian breeder are good import alternatives. Properly cooked food is safest. It is a myth that animals are more resistant to food-borne infections like salmonella.
