Facet Tropism!? . Yup - this feature Friday is revolved around pain management for the angular asymmetry between the left and right facet joints in the spine. Meaning they are potentially facing different ways = pain, and discomfort! . . Chief Complaint - lower back pain, worse when rotating or side stretching.... . Possible Causes: Debatable, but said to possibly be caused by degenerative disorders within the spine and sometimes old injuries from a young age (perhaps affecting growth). . Treatment: although it is a tough one to hear, this issue cannot be 'cured'. It is a structural issue where pain management treatments come in! Essentially my goal is to release stuck tissue, relax the surrounding muscles, and ease the discomfort by allowing the body to move more freely overall. This is where the homework given is SUPER important and will make all of the difference in pain: physio to strengthen the core, exercise to allow good circulation and movement through the area and of course removing any 'triggers' such as lifting heavily, improper bending through the back etc. . My treatments consist of lots of cupping above and around the low back, (pic 2 which you can see the red spots coming out indicating stagnation), local points surrounding the affected area (Lumbar) with electrostim! And backshu points to encourage proper blood flow in the body. . Initially these treatments are to be done 1x/week for one month - then re-assessing to see how the body is holding up with the pain. . *Emotions - you know the ones that are supposed to run their course in 90 seconds?! . So much pain we experience, usually has some form of emotion associated with it. Whether the actual pain itself is the causative factor, OR the pain is causing an emotional response. . We become angry, frustrated, scared, worried, sad or are in shock about the pain or the event that led to that pain.... . This leads us to the question of, "Where are we at personally with our emotions?", Or "What is our relationship to our emotions?". . Are we able to allow the human experience to run its course through the process of feeling these emotions alongside/leading to pain? . Emotions are great tools of information that we can choose to use for growth, or not! . Like Yvonne R. Farrell states: . "If we hold on to emotion or embody it as if it is ours, it goes against the laws of nature and that will result in suffering." . 1. Acknowledge it 2. Feel it 3. Quite a few years back, I used to THRIVE on being 'busy'. . Having full days, filling my schedule and to-do lists to the brim. Never allowing myself to just BE. And in all honesty, you know where that left me? . * Pushing aside my emotions, as I was not allowing myself to feel nor deal with them... * Never having quiet time or downtime to really sit with myself and check-in to see where I was at personally * Over-looking my actual NEEDS versus, filling my days with who knows what, and where instead of prioritizing things that actually filled my soul * Always having random discomforts, pains and odd symptoms showing up in my body. . What I actually needed was to hold space for myself - allowing myself to sit with shit. Allowing my mind to go through whatever process' it needed to; and essentially freeing my body of any 'dis-ease' . . . So, have you held space for yourself lately? I encourage you to take in the little moments of stillness, and check-in. Your mind and body will thank you . Can we do Acupuncture on the littles - the answer is YES. . Tiny humans love the idea of tiny needles too! . Sometimes they are so curious as to what it would feel like, or how it works and brave the first needle insertion while watching, and want more.... .
