Alberta's current curriculum only has one reference (in grade 5) to Black history throughout the entire K-6 curriculum. In Alberta's new curriculum draft starting in Grade 3, students will learn about Black history focusing on prominent Black Albertans.
"The draft curriculum wants to focus on teaching a knowledge-rich curriculum, and the loud critics of the proposed new curriculum are proponents of a skill-based curriculum." "When Core Knowledge was introduced, teachers felt it would be too demanding and abstract . . . But soon . . . they realized how much their students were able to absorb and how much they enjoyed learning actual stuff. Within a few years, test scores began to rise significantly as well." https://calgaryherald.com//corbella-knowledge-based-k-6-dr
