This wine is a unique expression of terroir resulting from the blend of Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Riesling and Muscat Ottonel grapes grown in Joseph’s own vineyard. The fermentation on the skins varied from 15 to 30 days. The layered flavours range from apricots, lychee, lemon drops, wild flowers and fresh apples. It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph’s Estate Wines’s founder, Dr. Joseph Pohorly. Dr. Joseph passed away on September 12, 2020 at the age of 88. Joseph foundedof Newark Wines in 1979 which became Hillebrand Estate Wines in 1983, the same year he made the first Icewine for Hillebrand and, in the process, became one of the early Canadian Icewine pioneers. In 1996, Joseph foundedJoseph Estates Wines. And in 2002, after receivinghis PhD in Environmen...tal Engineering, Joseph begin usinggrapeseed oil as an industry bi-product byprocessing theoil from thepomace, skins and seeds left from pressing grapes.Dr. Pohorly’s engineering stamp can be found on many of the drawings for barns he designed across Niagara. A private family funeral service will take place with interment at Niagara Lakeshore Cemetery. A public celebration of his life will take place on Sunday, September 20, 2020 from 1 to 4 pm at the St. Davids Lions Club on York Road. Arrangements entrusted to MORGAN FUNERAL HOME, 415 Regent Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake.
