My soil lab in operation. Includes an oven for drying the soil samples, a soil sieve set for particle size distribution of the sand portion, and a hydrometer for particle size distribution of the silt and clay portion. This equipment not only allows me to validate the permeability results obtained from my percolation tests, but also gives me the ability to determine whether a batch of sand is suitable for filter material in sand filter bed septic systems.

I am proud to donate some items for the Shawville District Minor Hockey Association online auction. Check out the auction at the link below and support the youth in our community by helping them make long lasting friendships and teaching them valuable life skills like leadership, hard work, and team work. https://m.facebook.com/groups/982547922169080/?ref=share

As demonstrated by this picture, our 2 metre deep test pit was a worthwhile exercise as it revealed a relatively high groundwater table at the location of a proposed septic system. Simply collecting a sample of soil from beneath the surface of a proposed septic system is just not sufficient for septic system design as the designer could miss important hidden features such as bedrock, impermeable soil, or in this case, groundwater. Installing a conventional in ground system would have likely caused impartially treated effluent to reach the groundwater and potentially contaminate the owner's well and neighbouring wells. Thanks to our diligence, a partially raised system was designed to thoroughly treat the dwelling's effluent for many years.

A couple from Orleans recently acquired my services to develop a grading plan for a shed and gazebo they are proposing to build in their backyard approximately half of a meter from their property line. A grading plan identifies the slope and drainage pattern of the property and is developed to direct surface drainage to a suitable outlet while considering the effects on neighbouring properties. A grading plan must be included with a building permit application for any develop...ment in Ottawa that may adversely affect the existing drainage. Examples of projects that may require a grading plan are a new building or addition that has a footprint greater than 55 sq.m, or any proposed work that is less than 1.2 m away from a property line. I was able to use my automatic level to measure elevations across their backyard and develop a grading plan to ensure the existing drainage patterns would be maintained and that there are no adverse impacts on the adjacent properties. Thank you for the referrals and thanks to everyone who liked/shared my page. Your support is greatly appreciated. See more
