I was able to follow a special police force in the favela of Sao Camilo in Jundiai a few days ago with my camera. There is an estimate of 1600 favelas around São Paulo. Poor living conditions within favelas often breed crime. Drug trafficking is common with most members being young male teenager, who are four-fifths more likely to die before age 21. Life expectancy within the favelas is around 48 years old while the national average is 68. Gangs not only initiate wars amongs...t each other in Brazilian slums, but also against police. Over 60’000 people die in the slums or due to drug trafficking in Brazil each year. That’s more casualties a year than in most recent wars. Corruption and a lack of resources & education seems to be the main obstacle to pursue change. It is important to acknowledge, however, that Brazil is so much more than just favelas and drugs. I have met the most beautiful people here and have seen some of the most amazing landscapes. Brazil is definitely a country of extremes but also one of the most special places on the planet
