Would You Hire Human Resources to do Your Accounting? ... What an absurd question! Yet companies hire accounting professionals to do their HR on a regular basis. Cori Maedel, Jouta Performance Group's CEO, was recently speaking in front of about 90 accountants. In a very non-scientific poll, she asked, How many of you have been tasked with the responsibility of HR? About 75% of them put up their hands. Then she asked, Out of those of you who are responsible for HR, how man...y feel you have the skills, knowledge and ability to do the role? Only one person put up her hand. Highly skilled accounting professionals often find themselves taking on the role of HR by default, in part because the value of the HR function is misunderstood. The challenge is, and has been for some time, highlighting the benefits of sound HR practices and showing companies the importance of having the right people performing the right roles. Historically, companies have felt that the accounting side of the business is the only specialized one, when HR is a specialty of its own that takes years to perfect. Moral of the story? What are your thoughts on the idea of employers mandating the COVID-19 vaccine? Where legislation is concerned, there’s nothing in current occupational health and safety legislation (OH&S) in BC indicating that vaccines of any sort are mandatory; however, employment can be made contingent upon employees following bona fide employer safety protocol (COVID related or otherwise). While policy around flu vaccinations has been considered as a benchmark, research indicates that C...OVID must be viewed in a different light, given it is much more infectious and deadly, vaccines are much more effective (95% vs 20-60% for flu), and there has already been considerable research on the transmission of the virus and efficacy of the vaccine. A survey released in January by Morneau Shepell, focusing on employees, found that the mental health index for Canadian workers reached a new low in December of 2020, down for the ninth month in a row.
