Bluenose II to visit five Cape Breton ports this summer, and will be in the Bras d'Or and North Sydney through Race the Cape 2016. Staff ~ The Cape Breton Post ...Published on February 17, 2016 SYDNEY - The Bluenose II will spend 19 days in Cape Breton as part of its summer sailing schedule. The famous Nova Scotia schooner will visit five ports on the island in July and August. North Sydney will be the first community to welcome the Bluenose II from July 12-14. The vessel will then move on to Baddeck from July 15-17, and Iona from July 17-19, before returning to North Sydney from July 21-23. The schooner will return to Cape Breton in August, making stops in Louisbourg from Aug. 10-13, and in Arichat from Aug. 14-16. The decks of the vessel will be open during all of its stops on the island, giving local residents and tourists a chance to explore the schooner, often described as Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador. News of the Bluenose II's scheduled visits to island ports generated some excitement among area residents and island attractions on social media, Wednesday. "On a cold, windy and rainy day we have some exciting news to share. The Bluenose will dock at the Iona wharf from July 17 to July 19," officials at the Highland Village Museum wrote on their Facebook page. "Be sure to mark your calendar and make it a full day experience by visiting the Village, having lunch at the Folk & Frolic Pub and stopping by the wharf to see the Bluenose." The Bluenose II's restoration process was completed last year and the vessel continues to draw big crowds. It is owned by the Province of Nova Scotia and operated by the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society. A crew of 18 sails the Bluenose II, which is 49 metres long and features a 38-metre high mainmast.
