The Ultimate Birth Team Midwives and Doulas are both professions in the birthing world that focus their time and energy on the amazing mothers that we support.... But, did you know that there are major differences between the two professions? Midwives are medical professionals, and there are multiple types of midwives too! Each midwife goes through special training to attend births in their preferred birthing locations, such as birthing centers, hospitals, and home births. Not only does each type of midwife attend different schooling, but they have different requirements depending on their state as to what and where they are able to practice. Here at The Midwifery Institute, we train Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) in standards that far exceed the NARM guidelines, and has been developed to comply with the ICM requirements through a four-year program. Doulas are support professionals there to help the mother through her birth with emotional, physical, and mental support. Doulas are trained to help educate and empower the mother through her birth! On my reading list now is Gail Tully's "Changing Birth on Earth", published last year. I am so excited to read this one! Since taking an @spinningbabies workshop in 2017, I have seen how the techniques and positions for birth can help labour. Specifically, I have worked alongside nurses who also took the training and it is THEIR support of the techniques that really showed how helpful it can be! While the doula role IS hands off (aside from hands on comfort techniques!) and supportive for sure, I feel that this workshop helped me learn so much more about ways to help clients with their births, when they want to do something.
