TIGHT NOSEBANDS HURT HORSES There is no ignoring the scientific evidence: tight nosebands cause horses physical pain, and mental distress. If your horse wears... one, you should be able to get at least two stacked fingers under the noseband on top of the horse’s nose (as seen in the image). Measuring with side-by-side fingers, or on the side of the horse’s nose or other location won’t give an accurate reading, and may offer a false sense of tightness. In addition to causing pain and distress, overly tight nosebands don’t allow the horse to open their mouth in an effort to avoid rein cues that are causing discomfort or pain. Unlike dogs, horses don’t vocalize when something hurts, and preventing such silent, behavioural feedback from the horse may result in compromised welfare. It is one of the creations that come along so rarely, when I have an urge to paint but no fixed idea of what to create, and then a feeling emerges and I try to define the feeling. It was a magical, rainy night, and the music in my studio carried me away. I began with the background color, a dark grey~green hue. Then I sprinkled raindrops of light pastel on the surface. In thinking of the way rain falls, I tried a new technique to streak the raindrops, and this added movement to the rain. Then I envisioned a dancing gray horse. The ground was invisible, the horse was suspended in the rain. He tossed his head in an expression of play.
