Today is International Trans Day of Visibility. It continues to warm our hearts to see so many trans siblings being out and proud today, answering questions, and overall being wonderful people. We recognize all of the trans people who cannot be out right now because of their circumstances in life or who don’t feel comfortable announcing their identities in public, and JQT wants to say that we see you, we hear you, we love you!! Check out Svara’s Trans Halakha Project: https:/.../svara.org/trans-halakha-project/ Chag Sameach!

2021.03.21 - On International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, JQT Vancouver stands in solidarity with our Asian, immigrant and sex worker siblings. As members of the Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities, JQT is acutely aware of racism and hatred and the impact of such incidents on our communities and families. The murders in Atlanta remind us that not too long ago we were grappling with the impacts of racism and hatred in the wake of Pittsburgh and Orlando. The Atl...anta shooting is a complex incident with intersecting issues: anti-Asian racism, misogyny, anti-migrant sentiments, and sex worker discrimination. Anti-Asian racism isn’t just across the border, it is here in Canada too, and predates the pandemic. It’s on the rise. According to Elimin8hate, project 1907 and their partner organizations back east, there have been over 1000 reported incidents to date of anti-Asian racism since the onset of Covid-19, with Canada reporting higher numbers of anti-Asian hate crimes per capita compared to the U.S. The majority of reported crimes are against Asian women. Please refer to the infographic below for data published back in September 2020. You can read Elimin8hate, project1907, SWAN Vancouver and Butterfly's joint "Community Statement in the aftermath of the anti-Asian, white supremacist and misogynistic murder spree of Asian Women in Atlanta" here: https://bit.ly/3cL3QIG To our Asian Jewish family, we offer our support and solidarity now and always. We will continue to speak out against racism in our own communities and in the spaces we occupy. We encourage victims or witnesses of anti-Asian attacks in Canada to report to www.elimin8hate.org/fileareport. All personal information will be kept confidential and will not be shared without your consent. As well, Kendell Pinkney, a contributing member to No Silence on Race (www.nosilenceonrace.ca), is part of a team offering spiritual and religious support to our Asian Jewish family. Kendell works with Ammud: The Jews of Color Torah Academy as part of his rabbinical studies. If you are in need of spiritual support, self-care resources, or space to grieve, please reach out to Kendell at ammudrabbinicfellow[at]gmail[dot]com In solidarity, JQT Vancouver

To learn about medicinal plants Tomorrow at 7, please join the group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/812486442815479/ Fun fact: Many of the plant compounds that humans treat as medicines are the same chemicals that plants produce to deter pests and herbivores! (many of these plants are in our gardens, our homes and our ecosystems!)

On this erev (eve) of Transgender Day of Remembrance, JQT Vancouver commemorates with a yahrzeit (memorial) candle, which will burn for the next 24 hours. The following are ways in which we all can take action to honour the lives of our trans siblings whose lives we remember: "EDUCATE YOURSELF: Take steps to educate yourself about transgender and non-binary people. Learn how to be supportive of someone who is trans and has come out to you. Learn about our obligation to respe...ct name changes. Make transgender lives visible and livable in our communities. LET US KNOW WE BELONG IN YOUR COMMUNITY: Share your pronouns. Create the space for others to share theirs, if they choose. Make sure that gendered spaces are inclusive of transgender people. Transgender women are women, transgender men are men. And work with nonbinary community members to ensure that there is space for them and their experiences. TEACH OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS HOW TO BE RESPECTFUL: Be a dugma, an example, to your community. Have inclusive policies that are transgender affirming. Evaluate the forms, applications, and questionnaires your community uses to be sure they are inclusive. CHAVER UP: Speak out as an ally in support of transgender people and transgender rights. Address the racism, ableism, misogyny, and other systems of oppression that are present in our communities." Over the weekend, JQT received LOTS of donations, including another $500 dollar-for-dollar match donation from Jack Huberman! We also were gifted an Alcatel 3T Tablet (Courtesy of Qmunity via TELUS) and a Google Chromebook Plus from an international donor! We are officially over the 50% mark. Our fundraising goal is now in sight. While we're so grateful for large gifts, the majority of the goal has been made up by donations of $8, $18, or $36!
