10 Native American Teachings to Live By I wanted to share a bit of Native American wisdom with you today. Like many of the teachings that come from indigenous culture, the 10 virtues below are intended as a roadmap for living a more balanced and connected life. The beauty of these ancient pillars of existence is that they always remain relevant, regardless of how evolved or learned we think we've become.... 10 Ancestral Teachings 1) The Earth is our mother, care for her. 2) Honour your ancestors through your actions. 3) Open your heart and soul to the Great Spirit. 4) All life is sacred; treat all beings with respect. 5) Take from the Earth what is needed and nothing more. 6) Put the good of all before your own interests. 7) Give constant thanks for each new day. 8) Speak the truth; but only of the good in others. 9) Follow the rhythms of nature; rise and retire with the sun. 10) Enjoy life's journey, but leave no tracks. They seem so simple right? But somehow these core concepts are easy to forget or take for granted when life gets challenging. I've come across this list before, but as I read through it again I was struck by one item in particular that really hit home. Today it was number 4, but who knows what it'll be next time! I hope you too find benefit in these native commandments.

Holistic Wellness With Judy Are You Blessing Yourself Or Cursing Yourself? If you look to my monthly message for something encouraging, something life-altering, something to ignite your day, then I’ve got good news for you this month! Studies tell us that our thoughts and our words come from what we believe. So without even trying, we’re always being pulled toward what we think of ourselves. Thus, are you speaking words of life, faith and victory? Or are you thinking and ...speaking defeat, loss and mediocrity? In other words, Are you blessing yourself or cursing yourself? I know curse is a strong word, but even scripture says in Proverbs 18:21. Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit you choose. If you’re thinking and saying negative things about yourself, you’re speaking death and defeat into your future. You can’t speak defeat and have victory You can’t speak lack and have abundant You can’t speak sickness and enjoy good health The truth is, what you receive, believe and speak about yourself is so important and the way to change is not by telling yourself how bad you are. That only invites more difficulties. Do you know how to bless yourself? All through your day, start speaking victory and start saying words of life! Start blessing yourself: I am disciplined. I am determined. I am strong. I will overcome this obstacle. Every time you speak blessings to yourself, it grows deeper in your spirit. It becomes engrained in your thinking. When you’re tempted to say something negative about yourself, turn it around. Not attractive enough? No, you are fearfully, wonderfully and beautifully made! Think you’ve reached your limits? No, you are surrounded by favour. Made too many mistakes? No, you have learned. You are forgiven, redeemed and restored! There’s a calling on your life, and assignment that only you can accomplish. The world needs your gifts, your talents, your smile, your love! Start blessing yourself! If you want to see this good, long, prosperous, amazing life, then you have to do something very important: Speak what is true, declare promises, BLESS YOURSELF! As you bless yourself, I believe you’re going to see dreams come to pass, promises fulfilled, abundance and influence far greater than anything you’ve imagined Blessed be, Judy Longstreet

WELLNESS WEEKLY Compliments of Liz Davis Beat The Blues With Sauerkraut Scientists have found a connection between fermented foods and happiness.... According to an article in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology, fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha, tempeh and kimchi seem to protect against depression by helping limit the amount of certain toxins and inflammatory agents that enter the body through the intestines. Specifically, absorption of lipopolysaccharide endotoxin, a component of certain intestinal bacteria that has been shown to provoke symptoms of depression, is reduced.

Holistic Wellness With Judy A Native Smoke Ritual For Renewal And Clarity Courtesy of Nick Polizzi The Sacred Science Have you ever noticed that when you walk into any place of worship or sacred ceremony, there is always one repeating theme? The symbols and prayers spoken may be different, but one thing is universally present the use of smoke. Beyond its pleasing aromatic qualities, smoke is viewed in many traditions to be a bridge between the world we can see and ...the one we cannot. Not surprisingly, smoke plays a crucial role in shamanism, and often serves as a healing medicine itself in native ceremonies. With spring on the horizon, the burning of sacred herbs and resins can be a very powerful tool. A way of starting anew, just like nature after a long restful winter. Some examples of sacred plants and resins to use for smudging and clearing: White sage: use for clearing, blessing, cleansing, and healing. Sweetgrass: use for blessing, bringing in more creative energy, and for calling in joy. Myrrh: use this tree resin for enlightenment, and for clearing away the past or anything preventing you from standing in your truth. Cedar: best known for it's power to purify places, objects and people. Cedar attracts good spirits and eliminate negative energy. In Native American tradition it was used to carry prayers to the creator. A Native American Smoke Blessing Oh Great Spirit, I raise smoke to the four sacred winds and the four corners, so that the blessings can reach my brothers and sisters in every corner of Great Mother Earth, while the smoke disperses all over Father Sky, lit by Mother Moon. Let the smoke pass to each their blessing and do away with all sorrows and unhappiness, fill their homes with love, and the light of your wisdom. If any be sick, cure them, If sad, make them happy, If they have needs, fulfill them. Protect them from all evil. Please Father, keep them well in good health, give them long life and wealth. Give them all your love as they love you. They can give testimony to your power and mercy, and most important your love. Oh Great Spirit, I love you with all my heart as I love my brothers and sisters all. I am your servant and theirs. I ask for only one thing give me strength to keep going on doing as I do on this spirit path. And so it is! Amen.

Wellness Weekly - Compliments of Liz Davis Popular in many trendy breakfast restaurants, avocado toast may be a heart-healthy way to start your day. A recent study found that reduced dietary potassium promotes elevated aortic stiffness, which can lead to heart attacks. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, one in four people die from heart attacks every year.... Consuming more potassium-rich foods such as avocados and bananas may help protect against heart disease.

Wellness Weekly Compliments of Liz Davis TURN TO THE SUN TO PROTECT YOUR HEART More evidence to show that sun exposure is good for our health.... A recent study completed at the University of Edinburgh found that the vitamin D produced by the skin, when it is exposed to the UBV light found in sunshine, may lower the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. According the study's authors, vitamin D causes the skin to produce nitric oxide - a potent vasodilator that helps blood vessels widen with a blood-pressure lowering effect. Unfortunately, the benefits have been linked only to the high-quality vitamin D produced by exposure to the sun's rays. Food sources and supplements have not produced the same results, according to the Journal of the American Heart Association.

WELLNESS WEEKLY Compliments of Liz Davis Stay Safe With A Brown Paper Bag When you are out and about, moving between indoor spaces where masks are required and outdoors where they are where do you keep your mask?... According to Dr. Chain Zagla, an infectious disease specialist at McMaster University in Hamilton, a brown paper bag is a good option, a plastic bag is not, and never wear it under your chin. A brown paper bag will protect your pocket or your purse or wherever you stow it from spreading any germs that may have come in contact with your mask. A plastic bag will keep the moisture in and allow bacteria to grow. Never pull down a mask and wear it under your chin. This increases the risk of getting any germs that may be on the outside of the mask onto your lip, neck & chin.

Holistic Wellness With Judy "Empty Out The Negative" For the most part, there are two kinds of people. Those that are either hurt, down-and-out, angry, fearful, defeated, or those that are victorious, full of energy, filled with joy and are living out their destiny. What are you holding on to today?... I ask you this because it’s easy to go through life filling your mind with the negative. Guilt, resentment, unforgiveness, anger, worry, doubt these are things that weigh us down. Think of your life as a container. You were created to be filled with love, joy, peace, confidence and success. When you let the negative things into your container, they take up space for the positive things that are meant to resider there. If you let worry in, it pushes out peace. If you let anger in, it pushes out joy. If you let doubt in, it pushes out confidence. If you let bitterness in, it pushes out the path to success. You’re designed with a limited amount of space. You don’t have the space for both the negative and the positive. You can’t go above 100 percent. Holistic Wellness With Judy We all have negative emotions, feelings and circumstances that come our way, but you have a choice to make. You can let the negative build up and fill your container, or you can empty it out. Give no place to guilt; give no place to worry; give no place to bitterness. When these feelings arise, you have to empty them out. You control what’s in your container! When you make a mistake, empty out the guilt If you didn’t do your best, empty out the regret. When you get passed over for a promotion, empty out the self pity. If you’re holding on to the old, there’s no room for the new. If you empty out the negative, learn from the experience and trust in the process, good things shall come your way. I wonder how many good things could be en route to you right now: joy, peace, confidence, creativity, advancement, wealth, a beloved, a healing?!? Blessed be, Judy Longstreet
