Yup yup... lots of stereotyping when it comes to drumming.

This kid is a serious cowbell player. And he’s got the footwork down too. Totally unselfconscious and totally focused.

I'm excited to be playing at the Bluebird tomorrow night (8-11pm) with Harley Card and Mike Milligan. I've been trying out some new things and working out some ...new ways of musically expressing. You might even catch me playing a tune on vibraphone or possibly singing a song! Please join me at this excellent new bar for some explorations into music. The Bluebird is at 2072 Dundas Street West - Dundas West and Howard Park - on transit just go to Dundas West station and either walk (about 10 mins, I think) or take the 505 streetcar. Also, it's on the College Streetcar line as well.

Today, for Jazz Appreciation Month, let's celebrate the brilliant Scott LaFaro, whose birthday was April 3. Scott started with piano while in elementary school,... bass clarinet in middle school, and sax in high school. At 18, he took up the double bass. Within a few years, he became one of the top call bassists, working with Ornette Coleman, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, and Bill Evans. What he accomplished before his untimely death in a car accident at 25 is astounding. Multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson composed "For LaFaro" as a tribute. You can listen to this stunning duo version with Reg Schwager here on Spotify: http://bit.ly/ForLaFaro See more
