Being on a volcano was foreign to me.. but I had no idea it would be so alien.
How is this even possible?? Those were the first words I said when I got to the top of Cotopaxi. The sulphuric gas coming from the crater wasn’t a great smell, but it definitely helped mask my smells
Reached the top and got to see Cotopaxi’s shadow over Ecuador! We got the best conditions I could have asked for. It was only windy over some of the ridges, no rain or clouds, and we had a full moon!! Had the headlamp on dim, but honest didn’t even need it!
With the new landscape that we're in, I've taken action to adapt my workflow. Say hello to my new studio space on Commercial Drive in Vancouver! Offices are slowly coming back but there are still major limitations. I can now offer clients a space for video and photo content creation. We've all seen how much impact video has had on the new normal to get messaging out. Feel free to reach out if you want to chat about creating something in my new space!
Cotopaxi calling!! You can see a small puff of smoke from its crater. I’ll be leaving the refuge at about midnight tomorrow to push for the summit. At 5,897 m, Cotopaxi is a whole 2 meters taller than Kilimanjaro! Wish me luck!!
We succeed or don’t as a team. There’s no way we could have done it without our amazing guide, Marco. He went up Cotopaxi 3 times in the week he guided us, and did other hikes with other clients in between. Imagine if I worked 10% as hard as he did..
IG: Instagram.com/julianfok As much fun as scrambling up Black Tusk was, I prefer the views from Panorama Ridge! Getting to see the tusk and the lakes together is ridiculously beautiful.
Being slow and steady was the key to our summit. The goal was to make it to the summit in time for the sunrise. We started off with the light of the full moon, and arrived with moments to spare. . . . #LonginesHydroConquest #EleganceisanAttitude #ad
In the light of the snow moon, the first full moon of February. On the bottom far left, you can see the refuge (4,800m) that we left at 12:15 am. It was a packed house of about 75 people. I had horrible stomach aches and couldn’t sleep at all. It took about an hour to get to this spot. In the distance, we could see the volcanoes we had seen or climbed before, from a totally new perspective. For the next 1 km of vertical elevation, I was going into new territory. For photography friends, these night shots were handheld at 1/6s, f/2.8 at ISO 5000 on a Nikon D850 w/ 24-70mm pre-VR, and manual focus due to low light.
Latest project with KPMG Canada. Shot last Friday! http://bit.ly/2omU9qR
Breathing in that sweet sulphuric smoke I wonder when the next time I smell that, if I’ll be mentally transported back here.
Making it to the summit and back has never been about conquering the mountain. We only get to come back with the experiences and stories if it allows us to.
