Spring Break Fundraiser: Kids Make Bread! Yes they can! Yesterday’s news of another lockdown will bring more hardship on our community. More people not returning to their work, more food insecurity and the list goes on. We are dedicating our classes this month to raise money for an organization that has for many years been the heart and Center for my neighborhood but also for Ottawans across the city. Dovercourt Recreation Centre is more than a recreation Center, it is a c...ommunity hub, it is a people’s Center providing a slew of services from fitness and recreation to arts and culture all while championing inclusion. And, they’ve made the SJAM and so many other programs across the city possible too! Not for Profit organizations and charities like Dovercourt have been really hit hard by this lockdown. They have seen drastic reduction in revenue because of the limitations on participation in their programming and services. We’re just putting the finishing touches on our Spring Culinary Boxes for kids.! This month we are very excited to have a spring-into-Spring set of recipes for your young chefs, along with many new goodies. For this box, kids will be preparing recipes for brunch - just in time for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.. Our science teachers have done it again with another fantastic food science experiment - this time kids will be learning about plant development & germinat...ing and growing their own food. Preparing food is even more fun when you have grown it yourself. From seed to table! We’ve included another locally sourced kitchen tool for their recipes and we’ve also teamed up with a local maple syrup producer to include an extra sweet treat in time for brunch season. Happy Easter! Like everyone these days, it’s been hard being away from family and friends. Easter with all of the baking and cooking that comes with it has always been an important celebration in our family. This year, mom, siblings and cousins came together despite Covid. We each carved some time on a very early Saturday morning and joined on zoom to make our annual Pastiera Napolitana - a special ricotta pie with an extra rich sweet pastry crust. A specialty from the region of Italy our family is from. And best of all, we got to keep traditions alive and be together, cousins, aunts siblings and grandma.
