C H A I S E L O N G U E My first furniture feature is a piece I always wanted to have growing up. There’s just something about them that exuded glamour to me and though the designs have evolved, they are just as popular today as they were in ancient times. Chaise longue (French for long chair) is commonly called a chaise lounge or lounger chair for it’s outdoor versions. They can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. We’ve all seen images of people ...laying back, being fanned and fed grapes, a true vision of luxury. The modern chaise was first popularized in 16th century France and was a symbol of social status. They were originally made with only the most expensive and finest materials. It was a way for the rich to rest without having to fully lay down or go to the bedroom. Call it the birthplace of naps. Often found in a lady’s boudoir, the Victorians moved it back out of the bedroom and into the living room. Due to the restrictive corsets that were the fashion at the time, fainting was a common occurrence and is why some refer to the chaise as a fainting couch. A depiction of Marie Antoinette eating cake shows it as lavish luxury. Another use in which the piece became popular was in psychoanalysis. The idea that a patient could be reclining and not have to face the analyst was thought to encourage free association and lower inhibitions. Sigmund Freud’s chaise is even on display in a museum. In the 20th century they became iconic in photo shoots of Hollywood leading ladies. Even George Costanza got in on the action in Seinfeld! These days with so many of us living in smaller spaces the standalone has been replaced by the chaise sofa but new contemporary takes on the old design have also become popular. So there you have it. A brief history of the chaise longue. Fridays are for film and furniture! When I was 17 I moved to Oakville, ON to attend Sheridan College. I was part of the first year of the Performing Arts- Preparation program. Not only did this program train us in different styles of dance, vocal music and acting, but we also studied behind the scenes. From lighting to set design it’s no wonder I watch live theatre and film with such a critical eye. I find it so interesting how set design and character development go han...d-in-hand. The design of a room becomes the backdrop that creates a mood and ultimately becomes a part of the story. Whether it’s the home of a character or the restaurant they go to for a first date, set design is just as much a supporting element as anything else. I was watching Marvel’s Jessica Jones and admiring how they used set design to help build their characters. This wallpaper is featured in Trish’s bedroom and I just had to hunt it down. Her whole apartment is amazing but this stood out the most to me. Are you like me and focus on small details when watching film and television? I can’t help myself so expect a lot more posts about it!
