Happy Thanksgiving from the JPS team [Tori, Sam, Julia, Faith] and our band of boy dogs! We are thankful for YOU and your PETS for keeping us busy and allowing us to make a living doing what we love. I, Julia, am also extremely thankful to have a staff that is fun, hardworking, and talented. My girls have made it possible for me to take a step back from grooming as I prepare for the arrival of my second child in December. While I am still very much involved in running the business behind the scenes, these ladies have taken over the day to day jobs and have proven their ability to keep the shop running smoothly in my absence. They have given me the confidence to take a proper maternity leave this time around - I am SO blessed! Thank you work fam

Great article all about ANAL GLANDS, by one of my favourite vets, Dr. Dobias. Squeezing glands used to be a routine part of pet grooming. Here's why it is considered an outdated practice and will only be done by us in special circumstances (vet recommendation). "There is a general misperception that a dog's anal glands should be manually emptied on a regular basis. In fact, expressing the glands too often may lead to decreased tone, delayed emptying and anal gland disease. It almost seems that canine anal glands get 'lazy' by having them squeezed and expressed too often"

This means it's been about TEN YEARS since I started grooming I use the info I learned on breeds, anatomy & general health on a daily basis when I'm working. Can't wait to get back to it! HOME GROOMING VIDEO #4: Trimming face, feet and bum Additional Notes: 1 Hold your dogs chin hair to maintain head control when trimming face. Especially when using scissors near eyes! ... 2 If you are confident and your dog isn't bothered by bum trimming you can scrap the comb and just trim the surrounding area. 3 As awkward as this is, remember that the anus does pucker when it feels air or movement close to it so NEVER hold scissors across it! 4 When trimming front feet on a squirmy dog, have a second person stand behind the dog and put their arm underneath the dog at the tuck up area (no major pressure or lifting, just there to let the dog know they cannot sit or spin) 5 Contact me for any further advice or questions!

HOME GROOMING VIDEO #3: Effective Brushing, Combing and Detangling Topics Covered: 1 Supplies... 2 Focus Areas 3 Brushing/Combing Technique 4 Light Dematting This was a challenging demonstration as I only have one dog to work with - Watson! These techniques can be applied to many different coat styles and lengths but I encourage you to let me know if there are areas on YOUR dog that you are struggling with. Send photos, videos or what have you. I am here to help! **Double coated (shedding dogs) brush with the direction of the coat as long as it's not matted. If there is a lot of undercoat you may want to use a rake or deshedding tool after brushing, and before combing** **Conditioning Spray can be applied to full dog before you begin (also helps with static of brushing) and then subsequently to each area you are working on. Drench matts and let sit for a few minutes before you begin to work it out** Remember to give lots of love and treats!

HOME GROOMING VIDEO #2: ADDITIONAL HOLDS FOR NAIL TRIMMING These holds are great for small dogs that are squirmy, low to the ground, senior or have any type of leg injury or stiffness. For long backed dogs be very careful to lift their front and back ends evenly to avoid injury. Note that James' fingers are safely out of the "bite zone" so if your dog is a little nippy this could work well too. With nippy dogs also add a 3rd person in front to distract with treats, praise, cr...azy dancing etc. if possible. **This is not suitable for severely aggressive dogs with a bite history.** Any questions or further struggles call/text or email me - there's more where that came from!
