Deciding something is important enough to take to Small Claims Court doesn't mean the matter will actually reach the Court stage. It may be settled at the mandatory Settlement Conference held prior to the Trial. Each matter is a different story.

Be careful not to overlook taking prompt action when an entity such as the City, or other entity such as Canada Revenue Agency sends notification of an infraction or Re-assessment, respectively. If you do not fully comprehend the letter or notice you have been sent, seek a Paralegal's help to fully understand the situation so action can be taken when necessary in a timely manner.

When you receive a Notice of an Infraction, discussing it with a Paralegal can be a very wise first step. Being served with a Plaintiff's Claim in Small Claims Court may require assistance to navigate and assist in preparing your Statement of Defence in a timely manner. A Provincial Offence under the Highway Traffic Act given to you does not necessarily mean you are guilty. You have the right to defend yourself.
