"We can’t skate over these problems any more. We have solutions that work. Protecting B.C.’s old-growth forests is a win for people and wildlife, today and for the future." NHL great, Kootenay-local and Jumbo Wild advocate Scott Niedermayer on why we need to protect BC's old growth forests today!
The Ktunaxa Nation’s establishment of the Qat’muk Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) will be a model of Indigenous-led conservation that can help us achieve our global protection commitments.
How do you decide what should be saved in the face of increasing human pressure on Canada’s landscapes? When Canada committed to protecting a set percentage of nature, it raised some obvious questions. Find out how a team of researchers tackled that question, and what it means for conservation in our country and the inland temperate rainforest.
#TBT Four years ago, we took your 61,526 signatures and presented them to the Ktunaxa Nation in support of their Qat'muk Declaration to protect the cultural and ecological vales of the Jumbo Valley. Today, we await the completion of the Qat'muk Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) after last year's declaration! Photo: Pat Morrow

We love our mountains Forests make up a big part of our mountain ecosystem, but they need our help. Only 3% of our old growth forests remain in BC and they remain unprotected. Join Wildsight next week to hear about a new approach to forestry and how we can protect the amazing values of from forests - clean water, carbon storage, wildlife habitat, quiet recreation and much, much more.
A river in Quebec now has the same rights a person does. Maybe the next time a giant resort is proposed in sacred territory, we won't have to fight for 30 years before it is protected.
This map will shock you. It shows the staggering loss of primary forests in BC and adds urgency to all our efforts to protect the remaining old growth forests that we have, like those in the Purcell Mountains. #JumboWild #Qatmuk

Grizzly bears have been at the heart of efforts to protect Qat'muk (Jumbo and the surrounding area) over the decades. Here's why.
The wolverine is one of the amazing critters that makes Qat'muk/the Jumbo Valley the incredible place that it is.
Celebrating wins is important! Yesterday, the BC government announced that it added 18 hectares on the eastern shores of Kootenay Lake in Birchdale to the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy (PWC), providing wildlife an important travel corridor from mountain peak to lakeshore. The PWC is the largest park in SE BC and is directly adjacent to what will be the future protection of Qat'muk.
It's been a challenging year but it hasn't been all bad. This year, we celebrated the Ktunaxa Nation announcement that they would be working with the BC and federal governments to establish an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) to protect the spiritual and ecological values of Qat'muk! Thank you for your dedication and passion to protect this special place over the years. Here's to a new year of working to protect Qat'muk/Jumbo, the grizzlies that call this home and the Purcell Mountains that connect it all.
