Today we invite you to start your 12 days by checking out Plastic-Free Greater Sudbury: an awesome local group who is working to decrease single-use plastics across the GSA. They are looking for people like you to take the pledge: to create simple goals for reducing single-use plastics at home. You can give them the gift of your help, and reduce plastics that end up in landfills and in the creek at the same time, by taking the pledge here! What better way to spend the holiday...s, than to treat our environment as we treat our family? https://www.plasticfreegreatersudbury.org/individual-pledge P.S. Did you know that real trees are better for the environment than fake trees? This is because they have a smaller ‘travel’ footprint, can convert CO2 to oxygen while growing, and you can use them after they are done for firewood, mulch, or compost! Try to reduce your plastic use by opting for a real tree this year!

Junction Creek Stewardship Committee 28.10.2020

Even a little clean makes a big difference! Last week, 58kg of litter was removed by Junction Creek Stewardship Committee (JCSC) members along Lilac Street by St. Francis Catholic School. This much-needed clean-up was one example of many similar challenges we face while removing garbage from Junction Creek. Large woody debris (which includes the logs and branches you see in this section of the creek) is an important part of a healthy stream ecosystem, as it provides ha...bitat for fish and other wildlife. Most litter that enters Junction Creek goes unnoticed until it gets caught on these branches and logs. As you can imagine, in-stream clean-ups in areas like these can be tricky and hazardous. We are often restricted to only removing litter that can be reached from shore. It's like trying to fish in the middle of a lake without a canoe or a boat! As we work towards reducing waste in our waterways and creating strategies to safely capture and remove litter from the creek, we try our best to clean-up the creek with the limited resources we have. To completely clean areas like these safely and thoroughly, a canoe is exactly what the JCSC would need! If you are interested in donating a canoe for our in-stream clean-ups, we are looking for something that is relatively small and light to easily carry to various sections of the creek. Reach out in the comments, or message us directly if you can help. Thanks!
