The area known today as 'The Junction' was once a separate municipality that prospered - or not - for twenty years before being amalgamated into the City of Tor...onto in 1909. Originally a small corner of rural York Township, the area's fortunes changed dramatically in the 1880s when it became the junction of two CPR rail lines. The CPR named its local station 'West Toronto Junction.' In 1886, the CPR offered to relocate its main railway shops from Parkdale to West Toronto Junction, provided that it was exempted from local taxes and given free water. The prospect of significant local employment led to incorporation of the Village of West Toronto Junction on January 1, 1888. The Village boundaries included most of the areas south of the CPR tracks, east of Runnymede and north of Bloor. The Village of West Toronto Junction immediately contracted to build expensive waterworks to pump water from Lake Ontario and distribute it to local homes and businesses. Property developers sold lots, built commercial buildings and attracted businesses and industries to set up in the Village. A year later, the hamlets of Carlton and Davenport, around Davenport Road, Old Weston Road and St. Clair, were combined into the Town of West Toronto Junction. The third map shows approximate boundaries of the Town of West Toronto Junction in 1890. In 1891, the Town Council renamed the municipality as the Town of West Toronto. By 1894, the boom was over and a deep recession was underway. Property values plunged, taxes were unpaid and bondholders forced a tax sale of almost a quarter of the land within the town boundaries. Recovery began around 1900 as several industries located in the town, including establishment of the Union Stock Yards adjacent to the CPR rail yards. However, the municipality was unable to finance sewer construction or paving of the muddy streets and popular sentiment favored amalgamation into Toronto. In 1908, the municipality was renamed as the City of West Toronto. By then, the City boundaries included much of what is known today as Bloor West Village - west of Runnymede, north of Bloor, east of Jane and south of Annette - and including the former Kennedy estate east of Runnymede. The first and second maps show the boundaries of the City of West Toronto as annexed by the City of Toronto on May 1, 1909. It's no wonder it can be confusing to define what we mean by 'the Junction.' Richard Lundeen Vice President West Toronto Junction Historical Society

We have a new and wonderful store that just opened up! It’s between Medland and Pacific on Dundas! Hi Neighbours! I wanted to introduce myself. I'm Aviva, owner of Healthy Moms. I just opened my first brick and mortar store, Healthy Moms Market at 2953 Dundas Street West, 2 days ago. I know...great timing! The store has a variety of healthy/natural/sustainable products including nutritional supplements specifically for moms and kids (I'm a nutritionist), healthy snacks, co...ffee/tea, natural cleaning/laundry products and personal care items including shampoo/conditioner/soap/sunscreen, sustainable toys for babies/kids and more! I've partnered with local mom/makeup artist/green beauty expert, Maria Velve, who has curated an extensive green beauty section featuring some amazing Canadian natural skincare and makeup brands. If you are looking for any of the above mentioned items, please consider shopping with us. You can check out what we offer online at www.healthymomsmarket.ca. During the lockdown, we are taking online orders for curbside pickup but you can also simply pop your head in, tell us what you need, and we'll gather all the items and have it ready for you in minutes. We are leaving the door open and created a little temporary nook at the front door for taking orders/payments so please stop by to say hello. Can't wait to meet you!
