This story is about Hall of Fame jockey Don MacBeth who was born in Red Deer. He is credited with winning the first ever Breeders Cup Race and his mounts amasse...d over $40 million in purse earnings. He was only 37 when he succumbed to cancer in 1987. Just 8 days prior to his death he had travelled 3000 miles to accept the George "the Iceman" Woolf memorial award. I am not knocking anyone or any track involved with how many day...s of racing we get now, I am just reminiscing on how it was. Can you imagine 281 dates of "A" track racing a year in Alberta? This doesnt even include the Canada West Turf Dates that year which would push the numbers over 300 dates total. See more
