What is Period Poverty? According to The Period Purse, 1 in 7 Canadian menstruators missed school due to a "lack of menstrual supplies during their period", and 1 in 3 menstruators "under the age of 25 struggle to afford period products." The JLT is committed to helping The Period Purse by providing individuals experiencing marginalization with access to free period products at over 75 locations in Toronto and reducing the stigma surrounding periods through education and advo...cacy. How can you help? By collecting donation items! The JLT is currently running a drive to collect the following products: - period products such as pads and tampons (opened boxes are acceptable) - new unopened menstrual cups We will be doing porch pickups from May 1st to May 9th. To schedule your porch pickup, please contact [email protected]. We will also have locations where you can drop off the products. Message us to find the location closest to you. This is a great way to use up your gift cards or store-based points, such as Optimum points! We are also collecting financial donations at this link: https://www.canadahelps.org//junior-league-of-toronto-new/. Our JLT Human Sex Trafficking (HST) Committee is focused on building awareness in our community and teaching others. Who is most vulnerable to HST? It is important to acknowledge that while #humantrafficking can happen to anyone in any community, some populations are more vulnerable. According to Polaris, People of Color and people from the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to be trafficked than any other demographic group. This is due to generational trauma, historic oppress...ion, discrimination, and other societal factors. Learn more here: https://polarisproject.org/recognizing-human-trafficking-v/. The Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking has launched the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline. If you are a victim/survivor of forced prostitution or forced labour, or believe someone else might be, call the hotline at 1-833-900-1010. As a women’s civic leadership organization founded in 1901, The Junior League has always been actively engaged in expanding women’s roles as leaders in communities worldwide. Today, we witnessed a historic moment as Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first woman Vice President of the United States. She is the first, but she will not be the last. #juniorleague #womensleadership

The JLT Stands Up for Human Rights. As stated on the UN's website, "Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted, in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth... or other status." "This year’s Human Rights Day theme relates to the COVID-19 pandemic and focuses on the need to build back better by ensuring Human Rights are central to recovery efforts." Public perception of what trafficking looks like often conjures up images of a white van and a violent, sudden kidnapping. This is one of the most pervasive myths of trafficking. JLT members are focused on our commitment to learning about the impact of Human Sex Trafficking, increasing community awareness and making an impact to abolish this issue through our member events and connections with organizations in the Toronto area who are focused on helping survivors, and educati...ng those before they fall victim. According to Polaris , most traffickers use psychological means (such as tricking, defrauding, manipulating, or threatening) victims into human trafficking. According to the UN's website, "emerging data shows an increase in calls to domestic violence helplines in many countries since the outbreak of COVID-19." However, due to the pandemic, many women now have limitations to their ability to access services, less resources are available, and "in some countries, resources and efforts have been diverted from violence against women response to immediate COVID-19 relief." As stated on the Government of Canada's Status of Women Canada... website, "It has been over 30 years since the murder of 14 young women at Polytechnique Montréal (December 6, 1989). This act of violent misogyny shook our country and led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women." On December 6, the JLT remembers: Geneviève Bergeron Hélène Colgan Nathalie Croteau Barbara Daigneault Anne-Marie Edward Maud Haviernick Maryse Laganière Maryse Leclair Anne-Marie Lemay Sonia Pelletier Michèle Richard Annie St-Arneault Annie Turcotte Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz "The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women is about remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those who we have lost to it; it is also a time to take action. Working together we can help prevent and address gender-based violence by remembering and learning from our past, listening to survivors, and speaking up against harmful behaviour. December 6 falls within the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Add your voice to the conversation between November 25 and December 10 and share the ways you are being part of the solution to end gender-based violence using the hashtag #16Days." One of the many perks of being a JLT member is the opportunity to help local communities through our Done in a Day (DIAD) events. On Friday, November 13th, several JLT members got together virtually to hand-write welcome cards for 250 patients who recently moved into CAMH's recently completed McCain Complex Care and Recovery and the Crisis and Critical Care Buildings. This event was done in collaboration with Gifts of Light and the CAMH Foundation to help ease the transition,... as each patient received a card of hope when they arrived at their new room upon move-in day. The goal of making the cards was to help the patients feel more comfortable with the knowledge that they are not alone, and that the community is thinking of them through this time. The JLT is so proud to partake in this historic moment for CAMH! The JLT is a community of over 290 women in the Toronto area devoted to community spirit and service. Some of the work our member's support includes working with youth and mental health at CAMH and Youth Without Shelter (YWS) and in fighting human sex trafficking and supporting survivors.
