The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ located just below the Adam’s apple in the neck. This secreting gland is controlled by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland within the brain. The thyroid produces T4 and T3 and they are responsible for regulating metabolism of every cell in the body. Hypothyroidism is when the gland is underactive and symptoms can include: -Feeling cold -Weight gain... -Irregular menstrual cycle -Miscarriage -Constipation -Depression -Fatigue and weakness Hyperthyroidism is when the gland is overactive and symptoms include: -Nervousness -Palpitations -Weight loss -Hunger -Sweating Far too often thyroid dysfunction is misdiagnosed or even overlooked entirely. There are many conditions and medications that interfere with the proper function of this gland and unfortunately it is not addressed appropriately. Pregnancy can also be a major cause of thyroid concerns as it requires an exceptional amount of work to keep up with the demands of a growing fetus. It is so important to have your thyroid assessed properly before and after pregnancy. Naturopathic doctors are highly trained in treating thyroid issues reach out to yours today if you feel if this is an area of you health you want to investigate further. #Alberta #NorthernAlberta #JuniperNaturopathic #JuniperNaturopathicClinic #NaturopathicMedicine #NaturopathicDoctor #YMMnaturopath #YMMstrong #iShopYMM #FortMcMurray #FortMcMurrayStrong #Thyroid #ThyroidHealth #ThyroidEducation #HypoThyroidism #HyperThyroidism

Now that it is getting dark earlier you may be feeling a bit more down. You may be finding that it is harder to get up in the morning or that you’re having difficulty focusing or experiencing low energy. It is natural human nature to experience a mild change in mood, energy, and eating habits towards the wintertime. But if you’re feeling like you cannot carry on with your daily life it may be time to seek options. Adding light therapy to your daily routine is a great way to i...mprove mood and energy. How to add light therapy: 1. Choose the correct light. You should be looking for 10,000 lux white light. 2. Place the light box at a 45-degree angle to your vision. Do not look directly at it. 3. Place it slightly above eye-level, to mimic the sun 4. Use for about 20 minutes first thing in the morning and another 15 minutes in the early afternoon if you require and additional boost. Using light therapy correctly has been shown to be as effective as anti-depressant drugs at managing mild to moderate depression associated with seasonal changes. Do you take an Omega-3 supplement? If you do, go look at the label. Seriously! Go look right now! You should see three components: 1. Overall total omega 2. EPA... 3. DHA The EPA and DHA are types of Omega-3s. Supplements usually contain both types. High levels of EPA have been studied for their anti-inflammatory effects, ADHD, major depressive disorder, heart disease, and more. High levels of DHA have been studied for post-concussion syndrome and the healthy development of brain/eyes in a fetus. Regardless of why you are taking an Omega you need to make sure you are taking the correct dosage. For example, a good dose of EPA for major depressive disorder is about 1500mg. Want to learn more about if the supplements you are taking have any value? Book an assessment! Are you wanting to optimize your immune system this cold/flu season? Here are 5 tips from naturopathic doctors: 1. Wash your hands. Washing your hands is one of the best ways to avoid spreading germs. 2. Take a good vitamin D supplement in the Winter. This vitamin is important at maintaining a healthy immune system and many folks are deficient in the Winter months when we don’t have much exposure to sunlight.... 3. Stay warm! Being cold decreases circulation and poor circulation means that the immune cells that are transported through blood/lymph can’t spread around your body quickly. 4. Drink bone broth. The vitamins, mineral, and amino acids in bone broth are important for your immune system. 5. Manage stress. Being overstressed or overtired can hinder your immune system’s ability to do its job properly. #ColdandFluSeason #ImmuneSupport #FluSeason #FluTips #ColdSeason #ImmuneHealth #Alberta #NorthernAlberta #JuniperNaturopathic #JuniperNaturopathicClinic #NaturopathicMedicine #NaturopathicDoctor #YMMnaturopath #YMMstrong #iShopYMM #FortMcMurray #FortMcMurrayStrong

Q: Are Naturopathic Doctors ‘real’ Doctors? What kind of education do they receive? A: Yes! Naturopathic Doctors do hold a doctor title and are regulated health care providers in the province of Alberta. They complete at least 8 years of post-secondary education including an undergraduate degree with science, anatomy, and physiology requirements and a naturopathic medical degree which includes clinical rotations. Naturopathic doctors have similar education as family physician...s regarding anatomy, physiology, biology, immunology, and pharmaceutical (prescription drugs). Naturopathic doctors receive additional training in acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, Traditional Chinese Medicine, spinal manipulation, and more. Here in Alberta, NDs can complete full physical exams including gynecological exams/paps, provide injections, and requisition and interpret blood work. Not sure if your clinician is legitimate or not? Ask them to show you their medical license! Another major red flag is if you can’t submit your receipt to your extended insurance provider. #naturopathicdoctor #junipernaturopathicclinic #junipernaturopathic #naturopathicmedicine #ymm #fortmcmurray #doctors #ymmlocal #ymmstrong #health

How Dr. Clouthier does her meal planning: I’m in charge of the grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking in my household. If you want to know how a Naturopathic doctor does her meal planning keep reading!... 1. I always plan for two weeks of meals at a time and I start by using the Flipp app (you can look at your store’s flyers too). I use sales to decide what protein and vegetables I want to buy. 2. After I find out what’s on sale I try to consider what’s in season. If you know me you know I hate diet rules. The only rule my household sticks to is gluten-free. 3. Then I look at my week and what I have going on. I plan for easy, fast meals on busy days. 4. I plan dinners first, because those usually become lunches for the next day. I try to add seafood at least 3 days of the week. I make sure vegetables are included in every meal. 5. Breakfast food is always the same: ingredients for overnight oats, frozen berries, smoothie ingredients, and eggs. 6. Snack foods are always the same: raw vegetables, hummus, gluten-free crackers, cheese, and nuts. 7. I plan to eat the more perishable foods first (leafy greens, fresh berries, etc.) 8. I always have some protein in the freezer and brown rice in the cupboard for last minute dinners and to fill gaps! 9. A good rule is to try to make as much as possible from scratch (it’s cheaper and better for you) 10. And oh yeah, never go to the store hungry!
