I’ve been sharing a lot about neurodiversity this month, especially the experiences of #actuallyautistic people for #autismacceptancemonth. What you might not know is that my partner, Alix (they/them), is autistic and exploring the intersection of gender- and neurodiversity. They’ve found community in the idea of being neuroqueer, or having a gender inextricably intertwined with autism. Takor said her family emigrated from Cameroon about 10 years ago, thinking Canada was a welcoming place and its citizens were open-minded. She said this incident has shaken her and makes her worried that racist, divisive attitudes are becoming more prevalent in Canada.

Fall is hard. My mind is a tangled web of conflicting emotions. The colourful leaves are stunning. I love the pleasing crunch of the leaves while I walk. ... But it’s fall. It means summer is over. It means the snow will be here soon. It means dark. Dark when you wake up. Dark when you go to work. Dark when you finish work. I’m solar powered. My heart and my brain run off the sun. I’m trying to appreciate the beauty that is autumn. We don’t often see it. Recent years have skipped that step and gone from August to a massive blizzard in September and the leaves are gone in a heartbeat. So I am trying to enjoy what we’ve got. Maybe it’s the combination of pandemic plus impending winter. Maybe the uncertainty weighs heavier in my heart than ever before because the entire world is in a state of the unknown. We cross our fingers and hope for the best, but we know deep down there is no control over the inevitable. So for now, the orange crunchy leaves will have to be that beacon of positivity. Shine on harvest moon, shine on.
