One thing i love the most about running my own business is that I can help my family and still satisfy my clients wherever I am. My clients mean so much to me that I know their details so well that I am able to answer questions to CRA even when they call and I am not at my desk and therefore don't have the information right in front of me. My clients aren't just a number to me. Today I was sitting at a picnic table waiting for my daughters car to be fixed at the mechanic ...shop when CRA called and i am so happy that despite the quantity and difficulty of the questions I was able to provide answers in order to achieve a successful outcome for my client. I never want this to change. I try to get to know each and every client individually and that way I can learn what their needs are in order for me to assist them in succeeding in their business. This relates to when you are looking for a job - but it isnt any less true when you are self employed. Know your worth and price yourself accordingly. Do not falter when you tell someone your price - dont discount it- dont shy away from it. If you are truly worth it they will see that in how you present yourself. One thing Ive learned in my career is that even when my per hour rate seems high to someone the money I save them and/ or help them earn in the long run is fa...r higher. Basically show them that they could not afford not to hire you. I have received some questions about the GST refund increase. This was based upon your 2018 tax return. And isnt affected by your 2019 returns which still remain due by June 1. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Someone once told me that you hire family and friends to do work for you not because you can pay them less but because you trust them and know that they will do a good job. I know someone who charges his siblings like hed charge anyone else and when his siblings do work for him he pays them as if he was any one of their clients. I thought that was interesting. But it totally makes sense. This is their bread and butter- they have to support their family and when they are do...ing work for you they cant do work for someone else. If they do too much work for friends who pay them less they wont be able to pay their bills and they wont have time to do work for others who will pay them enough. Can you imagine if you applied for a job and the supervisor was someone you knew and they felt because you were friends they could pay you less than everyone else doing your same job- I wouldnt think that youd take the job- I think youd be insulted. But there is this idea that when youre self employed you should give friends and family discounts and thats wrong. Some people believe that youre not a good friend if you charge full price. This is so not true- This is the persons paycheque youre cutting into. Next time you have a friend or family member who is self employed hire them and pay them what they are worth. Show them you value their work and that you think they are worth every dime you are paying. Thats real friendship.

Do you know the real difference between being a CPA and being an Accountant? Surprisingly, the only real difference is one has a license and one doesnt. As a...n accountant, you can still do just about EVERYTHING a CPA does. While there are a few services (like reviews and representation) you need a CPA license for, the vast majority of services, you dont! Accounting NOPE! Bookkeeping NOPE! Controller NOPE! CFO NOPE! If you signed up for online mail it will tell you to log into your account but it will not provide you a link to your account. You know how to login to CRA my account if you set one up so this is their way of assuring you that the email is legit by not giving you a link to click on. If you are my client and you get a call or email or even a text like this - contact me and I can look it up for you. NEVER EVER EVER GIVE YOUR SIN BIRTHDATE OR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO SOMEONE WHO CALLS YOU. TELL THEM YOU WILL CALL CRA YOURSELF . HANG UP THEN DIAL 1-800-959-8281 for individual or business tax returns or 1-800-959-5525 for corporations payroll or HST.

Sometimes you are paying for expertise. Is someone per hour rate is higher but they take less time. Its the expertise youre getting.

Update- I am very close to being finished installing software. Computer genius remoted into my computer this week and helped get it to stop erroring part way through the installs. It kept saying that install was interrupted and could not be completed. Now I only have Sage left to install but I need them to fix that for me themselves. However, that will have to be another day- Ive been in bed sick all day yesterday and have not been able to do anything.... Hoping to be... moving again some time today and able to complete a few things for clients. Who knew it took this long to get everything back on your laptop that you accumulated over years of running your business. Looking forward to a tax season free of technological issues. Excited to be able to get things done once again - It was quite frustrating being hung up by technical issues.

We all have these kind of clients/customers in one form or another. Just remember to remain professional at all times. Dont let personal emotions distract you. Some clients are so focused on their expectations of you that they expect that no matter what they do on their end you should always juggle and accommodate them and still maintain the expected results despite their interference. Clear expectations , I cannot emphasize this enough. Basically find out what they want f...rom you determine if you are able to provide it and then discuss what you need from them in order to deliver those results. Put it in writing so that you can reflect back on it later when they dont do their part but still expect you to do yours to create their desired outcome. If there are deadlines, put it on paper , if they dont meet the deadlines then you cannot meet yours. Do not work extra hours to accommodate their lack of responsibility and professionalism. And most importantly do not allow this behaviour to continue. Clients who dont respect your timelines and requirements but expect you to respect theirs will usually also have no problem trashing your reputation. These are tough lessons in business. Its unfortunate but in many cases it isnt worth it to go over-and above for clients. The good clients will not demand it nor will they take advantage of it and they will appreciate it. Learn to read your clients better and cut bad clients long before they destroy you and your business. That being said you will always have those who praise you and those who trash you. If you get a bad review look at it and determine if what they say is true. If it is then use it as a learning tool to correct things and grow... if it isnt then dont worry about it. You will still have many opportunities to show people the real value of your work. And the faster you cut those clients lose the more chance you have of showing that. A great read....

Update- I now have my new computer, but am still waiting on a docking station. Now to start the long process of reinstalling all the tax and accounting software and remapping the files to open properly on the new software. Once that is completed I will be back up and running, hopefully within the next week. Good article - people tend to not see the value in your work or recognize the amount of work you do when you dont bill accordingly. Freebees, courtesy work, lower prices all have their places and they also have their costs. Charge your clients what you are worth and you will get a better clientele. When you undercharge for, or discount your services, you tell your clients that you are worth less and if they are successful themselves they will not see you as valuable, and r...espect goes along with perceived value. Perception - people buy high class vehicles because of perceived value. A gentleman once told me that people will pay 4 times the amount for twice the perceived value. Show them that you are valuable. Freebees and courtesy work also should be rarely used -as incentives or rewards - and only when needed to increase your profits. When you dont bill clients for all your time you dont allow them to see the value of your work. In some cases it stops them from seeing the tireless hours you put into their file and leaves them with the perception that you arent doing much for them. If its not on the invoice, its like it never happened. you cant blame your clients for not being aware of what you do for them if you havent showed them. So, show your worth... value yourself... and let your clients see the benefits of working with you!!!!

Know what you are worth and stick to it. Dont base your value on what other people charge. They may charge less but maybe the value isnt there. You tell people what you are worth
