The Facebook Hearing
Facebook is cutting off access to third-party data for advertising. Here's why they're making the move, and what that means for advertisers. WHY - Would this have stopped any of the issues that took place during the Cambridge Analytica scandal? No. ... Why make the move then? Facebook is trying to get as far away as it can from having to explain how data that you did not provide to Facebook is being used to target you on Facebook. So third-party data providers get the boot. WHAT IT MEANS FOR ADVERTISERS - You can still target people based on your own lists (loyalty programs, e-mail subscribers, etc.), or based on data that Facebook collects on users. To Facebook, selling this data to advertisers is more defensible. Advertisers can no longer use data collected from third-party providers, found in "Partner Categories". This isn't a precautionary or temporary move - it's permanent. At least that's how Facebook is selling it. We'll be discussing Facebook's PR crisis further on Mind Your Marketing this week.
