Background on Forced Evictions in Sheikh Jarrah Eight Jerusalemite families totalling 19 households of around 87 Palestinians residing in Sheikh Jarrah are currently at imminent risk of forced eviction. Unlawfully applying Israeli domestic law to occupied territory, Israeli courts have ruled in favor of lawsuits undertaken by settler organisations to evict the eight families. Four families totalling around 30 people, were ordered to leave their homes by 2 May 2021. The 500 residents of Karm Al-Ja’ouni area in Sheikh Jarrah are refugees, who are experiencing an ongoing Nakba exemplified in their continued denial of their inalienable rights of return and property restitution, and the intensified coercive environment designed to drive their ongoing transfer. Webinar’s Goal In solidarity with #SaveSheikhJarrah campaign led by residents of Sheikh Jarrah, this webinar aims at bringing their voices and demands directly to the relevant stokeholds at the UN and international levels, and outlining the context by which the forced evictions are taking place: Israeli settler-colonial and apartheid regime, which aims at forcing the transformation of Jerusalem’s demographic composition to maintain Israeli-Jewish ownership over Jerusalem. The webinar aims at mobilizing immediate actions to stop all eviction orders against Sheikh Jarrah residents and the broader Israeli policies to empty Jerusalem from its Palestinian residents. The Foreign Enlistment Act states, Any person who, within Canada, recruits or otherwise induces any person or body of persons to enlist or to accept any commission or engagement in the armed forces of any foreign state or other armed forces operating in that state is guilty of an offence. Hold Canadian leadership responsible for allowing illegal military recruiting for Israel army in Canada, for Canada's own violations of Article 1 of the Fourth Geneva Convention which requires Canada as high signatory to take all actions necessary to uphold the Convention all all time.

12+ years of crushing injustice for Hassan Diab and family, and with today's devastating French appeal court ruling, no prospect of that coming to an end any ti...me soon. The court has not ended injustice, but deepened and extended it. As I noted at today's press conference: "There may be hesitation on the part of Canadian officials to intervene at this stage. No doubt the view may be that the French justice system should be allowed to run its course and Canada should not interfere. But when it has been so abundantly clear for so many years that the prospect of justice in France has long ago evaporated, that can no longer prevail. And given that the decision of the Canadian government to extradite Hassan Diab to France over 6 years ago played such a pivotal role in enabling all of this injustice, there is a particular expectation and responsibility that Canada step up now. Canada is not just an interested bystander, but is directly implicated and must seek to defend Hassan’s rights. As such, we all look to Prime Minister Trudeau, Foreign Affairs Minister Garneau and Justice Minister Lametti to make it clear to their French counterparts that Canada is of the view that the proper course of action at this stage is for French authorities to drop these charges against Hassan Diab and not continue with this prosecution. Human rights demands nothing less."
