If you've been working on your pup's "go to your spot" or down-stay - put it to the test! Try it in different areas of your house, try moving around in strange ways, place some easy distractions near them (a pillow, a low value toy) and see if your dog stays. Have questions about proofing this or other behaviours? Let us know!

Christmas is coming! It is that time of year again; a time for giving and helping our fellow animals in need. This year to celebrate the season of giving, JV Training and DogFriendship are going to be hosting another Guelph Humane Society Christmas Item Drive and Cookie Sale! Our bin will be setup at the Training Hall for you to donate items that the Guelph Humane Society is in need of, and GHS Calendars and Dog Cookies from Spoil the Dog Bakery will be on sale at the Hall.... All proceeds go to the Guelph Humane Society. Please feel free to place your cookie orders ahead of time! NEW THIS YEAR: due to COVID we fully understand if you are unable to make it out to the Training Hall to donate your items, so our staff will be doing an item collection every Saturday between the hours of 1:30-3:30pm. If you have items to donate to the GHS please let us know and we will arrange a time for a contact-less pick up. We will also have a cash box set up at the Hall for any money donations! Two more days until Spooky Night, y'all! During your final preparations for Saturday, try refreshing your doorbell/door knocking skills! Have someone in your house ring/knock (or record the sound yourself) and reward mark (yes, click) and treat your pup for keeping calm when they hear the sound. This will look different for each dog based on how tricky the door is for them - some dogs may bark and check in with you, some dogs may catch on and ignore the sound altogether. Work at your dog's level and figure out what works best for you and for them Let us know if you have any Halloween prep questions - we're here to help!

Halloween Preparations continue as we creep closer to the 31st! Here are some questions to ask yourself about whether your pup would enjoy joining your family outside on Halloween night. If the answer to any of these questions are a yes, it’s probably best to leave your pup safe at home Is this your pup’s first Halloween? (either by age or a rescue’s first year with you) Is your pup a little weary of things like hats, hoods or bulky clothing items?... Is your pup unsure of strangers or certain people or items like men, kids, wheelchairs or walkers? Is your pup sound sensitive? (jumpy around loud bangs or voices) If you answered no to these questions, and your pup is a seasoned Halloween escort - be sure to dress yourselves and your pup in some reflective items and you have a flashlight or flashing light/collar/tag along to make sure you’re visible to others around you Happy Trick or Treating! If you have questions or concerns about Halloween preparations, don't hesitate to reach out to us!.
