Cool shot of our new mixed use building on Bowen Island. Rather than seeing the grade change as a constraint it became an opportunity for the buildings timber frame to be expressed both inside and out wrapping up around the building. Roof steps follow the sites incline. An oversized bay window gives a large presence on the Islands main shopping street and is lined with a bench on inside with the neighbourhood pub. The building is set on an angle to the street following all the other buildings and this allows for a generous pedestrian plaza in front of the lower level shops. Boulders and ornamental grasses soften the edges and create a buffer between cars and pedestrians.

Something to talk about.

Visiting recently completed garden in Tsawwassen on my way to the Duke Point ferry. One year out and our planting’s are full and working as intended. This is ...a total make over of a 1980s era garden in front of wonderful Post Modern beauty on the water. The old garden was tired, the retaining walls and landscape screens were wood and not in context with the classical modernist seaside home so we did a total demolition and started with a fresh palette of day lilies, grasses, maples, boulders, concrete, gabion rock walks and steel site details. It’s not often I am commissioned to just do a garden and in this case the clients were wonderful in giving me cart Blanche to craft a modernist exterior space using my favourite plants and landscape materials which grace the home owners and thier guests as the arrive Home. Art calls out for a light filled space. Great shots taken by my fiancée’s very talented daughter of my recently completed Bowen Island Arts Council Gallery. I’m lucky to have designed the interiors as well as the exterior of this project. Simple birch millwork let’s the art be the star of this space.

A big thank you to all my clients, consultants and suppliers over the last 13 years. Last night at the annual BC Wood Design Awards I was named Architect of the Year. Truly an amazing honour and I was going up against giants in my field. As I always say, it takes great clients to do great architecture.

There will be nothing like this home once it’s complete. Part timber frame, part heroic concrete, part organic curved green roof, and a roof top terrace with views to the north and east of the North Shore Mountains as far north as Diamond Head (Squamish) and views to the west of the Straight of Georgia and Vancouver Island. Equally inspired by travels to Morocco as well as Scandinavia.
