We always try and end the day with a group excercise, usually that is place. Norman, who is in the front, is one of our board and training students, and graduates his program with us Friday. Everyone else is here for Dayschool and have all struggled with controlling themselves and holding stationary positions around other dogs (all for different reasons) . ... We take a lot of dogs for dayschool who are unable to be in regular "daycare" settings. We work on slowly socializing them, and working on their engagement and obedience around other dogs. We are currently FULL for all dayschool programs . #victoriadogtrainers

Norman is nearing the end of his board and training program with us, and has been an absolute pleasure to have around. He came to us with little manners , poor leash walking, recall, and obedience, and reactive to dogs and people. He also wasn't able to be contained in a crate or an xpen, and his owners were having troubles with their other little dog and him in the home. We have done the following with him over the past 4 weeks:... Built engagement in distracting environments improved his impulse control and staying still taught recall and proofed it around distractions conditioned to an ecollar for reliability leash walking around distractions his reactivity to dogs is almost completely gone he can be crated whenever and for long periods of time he happily enters a crate developed relationships with new people and have taught him how to act around people he is uncomfortable by worked in group settings with ease taught him frisbee and some tricks to give his owners something fun to do with him Our last week will be all about proofing these behaviours and continuing to get him into new environments. We now have available board and training dates for end of April, and into May. #victoriadogtrainers

Covid 19 Update Unfortunately, due to the increased number of cases, as well as the new restrictions, we are suspending/cancelling all of our classes (ONLY group classes ) until further notice. **please note , this does NOT include our January classes at this time. Registration is still open for all January programs. We will reassess after Christmas to see what changes need to be made, and if they need to be postponed. ***... If you are enrolled in a program you have been emailed about the cancellation with options. We apologize for the inconvenience, and are hoping to be back to full capacity in the near future. Phoebe, who is one of our board and training students, is coming along super well with her program ! She came to us very fearful, and highly reactive to noises dogs, and people in a distance. Fast forward to almost 4 weeks later....... And this is where we are at. Her body language is much better around new dogs and out and about walking. These things take time. You can't rush the process. You just have to take your time and be there for the dog every step of the way with guidance. She still has a ways to go, and we will still need to integrate her back home, but we are very excited about her new attitude! Her owners are dedicated to the process and we are soo happy to have clients like them! #victoriadogtrainers #yyjdogs

We have a group of Puppy students right now that are really blowing us away with their commitment and dedication. As a group, they have moved up 3 levels in the first 8 months of their puppies lives ! In the times we are in, this is super for their dogs exposure and training. ... Lenny Lucy and Jackson have all arrived for Dayschool this morning and we got right to work ! Group place while each dog comes in, followed by individual sessions while the other dogs have to rest and wait on their beds. This is much harder to do first thing in the morning because they are all jacked up and ready to start the day. These three are doing beautifully!! -------------------... Our Dayschool program runs Tuesday to Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm. This program helps build on what we have been working on with training, either privately or through our group classes. Dayschool keeps your dog mentally and physically stimulated during the day, and benefits your training. We also provide Positive Socialization when appropriate, to all of our Day Schoolers. Thinking about getting a puppy ? Here are a few things to do BEFORE your puppy arrives. 1. Make sure you have all the equipment you may need . Crate (x2 one for house and one for car) , proper matt, food, treats , enrichment toys , leash, harness , collar, tags, xpen and grooming supplies. ... 2. Find a trainer ! This is soo often done AFTER people bring a puppy home, and most good trainers are booked at the minimum, weeks in advance. Your trainer will also be a great resource for you for other puppy related services you may need ( grooming, veterinarian, boarding service , dog walker ) . We always want people to ask us first as we have a ton of recommendations that align with their training program ! 3. Find a good groomer who's willing to work with your puppy and make them comfortable being handled. This is soo important! We are always encouraging people to get their puppy in lots ( one a month at minimum for a few months) to be handled, nails, bath brush etc. They don't need to do the whole shebang everytime, but just a nail trim and maybe a quick blow dry , will set them up for success in the future. Its worth the investment. Trust us. 4. Find a veterinarian that you are comfortable with if you don't already have one. Ask friends and family of personal experiences, and call and chat with them. Its important to have a good relationship with your Vet! **look into pet insurance, we reccomend TRUPANION Trupanion 5. Find a boarding service or dog sitter that you are comfortable with. Again, this is something to ask your Trainer, as sometimes they offer this service and will keep your pup on the right path to grow and learn and have positive experiences! Make sure this service is safe and secure, and open to answering all of your questions. Look through their social media and make sure the dogs in their posts / videos look like dogs you want your dog to act like. Avoid places that just let the dogs go crazy without rules and structure. This will greatly hinder your training. Happy Puppy Raising !!

Both dogs have struggled with confidence and over arousal around new dogs , but are showing us how far they have both come ! ... Today they went for a walk offleash together and showed us how well they got along, so we let them have a romp in the training ring after (sorry Sam and Kate, they are NOT clean ) . We utilize our place beds to teach them impulse control and how to be still and chill. ... Engagement session in a new environment with two of our Dayschool Students , Zoe and Maya. Getting the dogs around new dogs and out to new environments is super important for us, when their training is at a point where we feel they are ready. Everything we do at the facility needs to be taken to new areas.

What an awesome weekend !! Moo and Ullar played some of the best rounds of both Toss N Fetch and Up Dog games this weekend that they have ever played !! They both moved up into advanced for most of the Updog games this weekend ! ... They both truly have come so far. I am always so incredibly proud of how BOTH of them handle "trial" environment, as well as being around new dogs and people! We also did two nights of camping which is always a blast! Mufasa had 3 rounds of 9.5 in the Toss N Fetch world wide chamionships and he finished 43rd in the Handler division!! He also won first place in Greedy!! Ullar had some really nice rounds of Toss N Fetch also, but I was so frazzled I forgot to get his score He also places first in Time Warp in the advanced division!! Thank you soo much to the Naniamo Disc Dog Club for hosting !! Victoria Disc Dog Club really came out to PLAY!!! Soo many new members joined us ! Our next trial is in 3 weeks and we are going to be working hard on our freestyle routine!! #victoriadogtrainers #victoriadiscdogclub

A lot of people have gotten puppies in the last few months, so we wanted to share some tips we have learnt over the years. When you get your new puppy home, there are 6 things we would focus on the first couple of months ! 1. Getting used to their crate . Start with short periods , car rides, kong chewing time etc. Crate training is so very very important ! ... 2. Use their meals for small training sessions throughout the day. Everything from going into their crate, coming when called, when you say their name, and general engagement. 3. Create a good attitude for learning before you start asking them to do a bunch of stuff ! One of the best things you can do is play small short games with your dog to build their confidence! Working with you should be fun! Don't get hung up on obedience, leash walking etc. 4. Yes, we all have a bit of a routine, but change it up for them! Routine helps with potty training, but it can also cause them to pattern unwanted excitement around things like formal meal time. I love having my dogs not expect whats coming some days! 5. Management will be your best friend ! Too much freedom and your puppy will start to develop bad habits. 6. Socialization. This is a big one. Don't have everyone meet / pet/interact with your puppy. Going into new environments, and meeting new dogs and people is SOO IMPORTANT ... BUT you want to make sure its going to be a positive experience from your puppies perspective. You also want to make sure you are creating healthy habits that help you with training. Go into a new environment and have them chase you around for a toy or food. Play games and show your puppy YOU are the most fun thing ! Don't make it about their environment. Lastly, if you have older , calm, well trained dogs who can go for walks with your puppy and calm walk instead of playing like mad, that will be your biggest asset! Happy training everyone !

Today was feild trip day for some of our training students , and one of our foster dogs, Yoda ! Zoe worked on being calm in a busy area. Not many dogs , but people everywhere ! She has to lay down and be still. (which is very hard for Zo outside the house ) Kobe worked on general engagement and watching a bit of the world go by. We also worked on leash walking ! He has come a long way in his one week of puppy camp! ... Leia is here for a week to brush up on some recall, and general listening. We worked on engagement, and holding positions with a touch of recall. Engagement really is the first step to that, so we started there ! Yoda held a beautiful place with Gemma while we did all sorts of weird things. Stef pushed a shoppjng cart around (by her foot ), people walked by, and lots of weird noises . He didn't bark at anything!! And lastly, Gucci is back to brush up on all the skills she learned when she was with us last. She worked on leash walking, general engagement and place. We really wanted her to practice relaxing in public, and "turning off" . She did beautifully. #victoriadogtrainers #westcoastdogtraining

Place is always funner with a friend ! Our -ready to be adopted- foster boy Hank, and one of our Training students Zoe , hanging out on Place after a good run in the yard, and dip in the kiddie pool! Hank is working on his over arousal while playing , and zoe is working on her engagement around other dogs. ... Saturday mornings are normally spent tidying up the yard, and social time with the dogs. Zoe LOVED her time in the water . #victoriadogtrainers
