KNEE PAIN - The next hot topic on the trails is knee pain. I thought I would write a short blog about some of the ways to protect your knees while hiking. Hiking Poles - Hiking poles have been shown to reduce the load on the hip, knee and ankle joints and reduce the energy used while hiking. The poles should be shorter when going uphill and longer when going downhill. You should be able to maintain a comfortable grip and an upright posture. Footwear - Having the right shoe ...for the terrain you are hiking on and making sure it has been adequately fitted is important. Dont forget that hiking boots need upgrading just like your runners. Stretching - As is the case with any form of exercise a dynamic warm up before (lunges, squats, calf raises, leg swings, hip circles, etc) and a static stretch after is recommended. Bracing - compression bracing or other braces and taping may be helpful if you have an underlying knee injury. This is something your health professional can advise on. . . . See a health professional who knows knee pain for more specific advice. #hiking #kneepain #preventativehealthcare #osteopath #osteopathicpractitioner REF Christopher Knight, PhD, 2001, University of Massachusetts. View from the top of today's hike. I had plenty of time to think about knee injuries and rehab particularly on the steep downhill. #meniscus #acl #Osteopath #quadstrength #proprioception

PLANTAR FASCIITIS has been the hot topic on a lot of the hikes I have been on lately. It occurs when the connective tissue (plantar fascia) that goes under the foot from the heel to the toes becomes inflamed or painful. To help avoid PF it is important to have a shoe that fits the shape of your foot, so that your toes arent being squashed and your foot can function the way it is designed to. Secondly, is to get your feet out of your shoes and do some strength/proprioceptio...n exercises to wake up those feet muscles. Thirdly, the foot is only as strong as the hip that drives it. This is where a practitioner that works in this area can address your biomechanics to help with how your feet are functioning. Got more questions about plantar fasciitis, send me a message or make an appointment today? . . . #osteopathy #plantarfasciitis #feet #wholebodyhealth #footwear #biomechanics #strength https://www.mayoclinic.org///symptoms-causes/syc-20354846

Women are no longer being treated as small men when it comes to sports medicine. More specific research is emerging to show how menstruation and training load can be considered to reduce the risk of injury. #womenshealth #injuryprevention

Did you know that yesterday was World Osteoporosis Day? One in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will suffer an osteoporotic fracture. For most people this is a preventable and manageable condition. One of the major factors to help manage osteoporosis is exercise. Particularly weight-bearing and resistance exercise that helps to maintain muscle and bone strength. It is never too late to start! #WOD #bonehealth #exercise

The life impact of chronic pain Whilst invisible, pain is very real for the 6.9 million Australians living with musculoskeletal conditions. Whilst debilitating,... the reality is that without pain management, a third (34%) of Australians who are impacted by chronic pain, will develop mental health conditions. Musculoskeletal pain is the leading cause of disability for a third (28%) of Australians which leads to a feeling comparable to burning or tingling, leaving those living with pain unable to work, sleep or even walk. In support of National Pain Week, Osteopath and Pain Educator, Dr Elizabeth Howard talks about the impacts of pain on the whole body.
