Kalijo Pilates 09.01.2021

During this season of life where we are full of change, it can be hard to find the balance. Wether you are homeschooling, working from home, juggling parenthood, etc, finding time to be still and have connection can be a challenge. Take a look at your daily routine and see where you can simplify. Can you find some time to be still and connect with your breath? Can you find a time to move your body intentionally, or to get some fresh air and sunlight? Eliminate the clutter of... your day, and strip it back to the basics. Can you balance all of your daily tasks? For some of us it's easy to get caught up in one task. Work work workkkkkk. And no play. Or, lots of play but no focus. How can you balance all of the floating balls in the air? Can you make time for your personal relationships. Can you make time for your children or pets. Can you make time for YOU? Can you make time? What do you need to do to create balance in your day to day life? What do you need to restructure, reorganize, and reschedule? How are you feeling? Balanced? Chaotic? Centered? Stressed? Hello 2021! With the New Year here, it is time of year when everyone is setting goals, or so it seems! The keys to setting a movement goal:... 1. Start small! Maybe your goal is to be able to conquer the exercise "Teaser". Perhaps instead of going hard into the teasers, which can bring out frustration, try and break down the exercise into the specific pieces that you could be working on. That way you are starting small, building up the skills you need to master that exercise! 2. Fundamentals! Maybe you goal is to get better at extension exercises. Play around and get creative! Look at the different extension exercises in the repertoire, and see which ones you can practice. Play with props to help get you into position. 3. Create a movement space! Is your goal to have a more consistent home practice? Try setting up a space that is inviting, comfortable, and enjoyable in your home or office. Having a special place dedicated to your movement practice can help motivate you to get moving on your mat! 4. Commitment! Maybe you aren't the type of person to motivate your own self to exercise. Think about signing up for some of the movement classes that we offer online! Or jump into the small group classes, or private lessons that we offer in studio. Having eyes on you and being surrounded by other like minded people can really help! 5. Hold yourself accountable! Is it hard for you to maintain your commitment to your goals? It's not easy! Holding yourself accountable could look like: having a friend text you to see how the goal is going, signing up for a class with a partner, making a vision board so you can see your goals, writing down your movement classes on your calendar.... You also pivoted with us into the world of online classes! It has been so inspiring to see you all make a commitment ...to us, as well as yourselves each and every day. There have been some real transformations this past year and it is so beautiful to be a part of! Thank you for joining us for our first online retreat! Upper Ab Curling! Do you notice a difference between the two versions shown here? What can you observe? Check out how her neck, lumbar curve, and pelvis shift when doing her ab curl correctly vs incorrectly. When doing your ab curl, it is important to maintain length in your spine, as well as managing your intra abdominal pressure! Doing a bunch of ab curls incorrectly is not going to train and tone your abdominals! You will start to see doming occur instead of a scoop. ... You could think of yourself like a wave in the ocean: your inhalation is the lengthening of the wave, sucking back into the ocean, and your exhalation is the arc and curl forward of the wave as it comes to shore: a lengthened curve! It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our sweet boy, Jacko he was such a caring, peaceful, loving boy, whom we will miss with all of our hearts! In Kath’s words: My best friend Jack has passed peacefully in my hands, with his last breath in the sunshine on the grass in his natural process of death. Jack will be forever missed in my family and at the studio, as he was a tender kind soul, who watched my every move with love in his eyes... he was my shado...w and best friend, that at 47 years old, I had never felt the kind of love from an animal, like Jack shared with me. Joe Pilates speaks to the breath, as the first act of life, and the last. Let’s talk pelvic mobility! Where does your pelvis currently position itself? In an ideal world, your public bone and front hip bones (asis) are on the same plane. Your sitting bones are blossomed and like flashlights shining down toward your heels. Do you live in the tucked pelvis? Arched pelvis? Neutral pelvis? ... As you play with your pelvic mobility, noticed what it does to the rest of your body. Does it feel different in your lower back? Quads and hamstrings? What about the placement of your ribs? Be curious and see what you personally need to do to get to neutral. You can also play with your pelvic positioning while standing, kneeling, sitting, laying.... perhaps your positioning is a little different in those variations of being!

Core Connection Specialist, Certified Yamuna Ball Rolling Instructor, Hypopressive Lvl 2, Dancer, Choreographer... Katherine Denham is a Licensed Teacher Trainer for The Pilates Center in Boulder, CO. At Kalijo Pilates Studio, she offers the Advanced, Intermediate and Bridge Programs in Pilates Teacher Training. She also teaches modern dance and Pilates conditioning at Waldorf Ballet. Katherine is PMA certified and has been teaching dance for over 20 years and Pilates for over 13 years. At the age of 20, Katherine was introduced to Pilates to help rehabilitate from two car accidents within 6 weeks of each other. Katherine knew right away that Pilates would be a large part of her life. She believes it is never too late to learn how to breathe, move and play, through movement, and with proper training and education, the centering of one’s mind, body and spirit, can return you to life!

Cara has been working in the field of holistic health for over a decade teaching yoga, meditation, and as a massage practitioner. She is very excited to be expanding her umbrella of holistic health and wellness with the Classical Pilates method as both an ongoing client and student of The Pilates Center, from Boulder, Colorado. Through Pilates, Cara has found relief from sciatica, wrist pain and knee pain that developed over years of intense physical activity such as tree planting, landscaping, massage work and sports. As a mother of three, and a sports and adventure enthusiast since birth, Cara has dedicated her professional life to seeking out and exploring how to stay healthy, active and strong. Pilates, Yoga and ball rolling have helped her heal from sciatica, back and neck pain. Then, enjoy the freedom of our voices when they are warmed-up and supported by the power of our relaxed, strong diaphragms. 10:30-11:30am : Dancing Feet/Foot Care This workshop focuses on finding stability in our feet to feel freedom through our body. Centred around simple exercises and cues that can be used daily to tap into the power of our feet that supports our whole body from the ground up. These offerings are all online via Zoom. Teacher Feature ~ And first off, we want to wish a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our Janer!! We love you! JANE SMITHER Advanced Classical Pilates Instructor Jane spent over 25 years as a Motion Picture Camera person and Underwater Camera Operator in the film industry. She injured her shoulder during a ski accident and took another fall a year later tearing her tendons and dislocating her foot. The injuries eventually took their toll on Jane and her business. She ended up having reco...nstructive foot surgery and on a waiting list for shoulder surgery. While waiting for shoulder surgery and rehabilitating her foot, Jane discovered Pilates. Pilates helped Jane rehabilitate herself after spending several months in a cast and a wheelchair. Eventually she opted out of shoulder surgery after realizing that Pilates could help strengthen the muscles surrounding the tear in her shoulder. Achieving great results & becoming pain free in her own body, Jane decided to take her Pilates training a step further. She decided to train as a classical Pilates Instructor at Pilates from the Center in North Vancouver and The Pilates Center from Boulder, CO. Jane offers in depth knowledge in the feet and shoulder rehabilitation. Jane is available Tues-Thurs, and teaches a Tower Class on Wednesdays at 9am! Check out her class now! :)
