Now, the Ukrainians in Canada: An Introduction course is history! We completed all the learning activities and today had fun sharing Ukrainian-Canadian food sto...ries: Pampushky in Kharkiv and Cherkasy and Vancouver Borscht with sour cream, Medivnyk and Austria Walnut Cake in Vancouver and Victoria. Kamloops krashanky and unique dryapanky from Duncan, BC. Easter bread from sea to sea and Zoom and Craft created eggs and all the food that will be made today. It was great to see a blessing-ready Easter basket from Calgary and many first-time-created Ukrainian foods in Winnipeg, Kamloops and hear stories about long-lasting family traditions in Brandon, MB and Maklin, SK! Happy Easter to all who celebrate this week. Thank you to all who shared your stories today and for the last three months making this course very special for me. I will keep celebrating Easter until May 2nd while trying to complete all the winter term grading and practicum supervision. As this course comes to an end, a new course will start in May. Ukrainian-Canadian Community Learning will continue. Special thank you to everyone who made this course a reality. It was more than a decade in the making but the wait was worth it! See more

Celebrate our province’s diversity! Every year in BC the third week in November is proclaimed as #MulticulturalWeek. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our multicultural communities and to appreciate the way diversity enriches British Columbia. Multiculturalism strengthens our province and puts us on the map as a society that values inclusion and cultural diversity something every British Columbian can be proud of. So what is the BC Multiculturalism Act? Here is a 1-page version of the act. With the extra formalities of legal-speak trimmed down, it is an insipring document that presents a version of the province that we are always striving to realize.
The Kamloops Hindu Cultural Society marks #Diwali this year, this Sunday Nov. 15th with a special fundraiser event: "Hello and Namaste to Everyone, This year is unique because of Pandemic Covid - 19. This pandemic has made the regular social festivities and interactions very challenging this year, so as a safety measure Kamloops Hindu Cultural Society is not organizing any in person events including Deepawali. But at the same time to celebrate some festivities in a symbolic... way and to keep the cultural and tradition of celebration going, KHCS is organizing a Drive in / Pick Up Diwali Dinner. Tickets are $100 each, and include the following items: Paneer Butter Masala (Paneer Maakhani). Chana Masala. Mixed Vegetable Curry. Mixed Pakoras. Naans (06). Jeera Fry Rice. Salad. Dessert (Gulab Jamun 04).
Happy #Diwali Kamloops! Diwali is widely known as a Hindu tradition, however it is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Newar Buddhists. For each faith it marks different historical events and stories, but nonetheless the festival represents the same symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. This 5-day celebration falls on Nov. 12~16.

OBITUARY: GURDEV KAUR SUNDHU (age 87) The family of Gurdev (Devvie) Kaur Sundhu sadly announces the passing of our mother on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at Vanc...ouver. Mom was born in Chakkar Village, Punjab, India. The tranquility of family life was shattered by the extreme communal violence that accompanied the partition of the Punjab into Pakistan and India. She became separated from and lost her entire family. There began a remarkable life journey of courage, perseverance and adaptation. She was married to the late Rattan Singh Sundhu who immigrated to Canada in the early 1950’s and she joined him shortly thereafter. They worked on a family farm in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley before settling in Williams Lake in the late 1950’s. They were a pioneering Punjabi couple: hard working, conscientious of setting a good immigrant example, and building a good life for their son and daughter. When our father suffered a severe brain injury in 1968, with two young children, no disability income and a disabled husband, she took up work outside the home to support our family. She worked her way up from a hotel laundry, to dishwasher and restaurant cook. She could not read and write, and memorized all the food orders she was amazing. We say, she fed most of Williams Lake at one time or another with her cooking skills. In 2003, after nearly 45 years in Williams Lake, Mom moved to Kamloops to be closer to her grandchildren. With her outgoing personality, she made a lot of friends and was active in the Punjabi and wider community. In 2011, she made her final move to reside near her daughter in Vancouver, again making many friends in her neighbourhood. In 2018, Mom was interviewed on her life story. She revealed painful recollection of the loss of her entire family, the horrors of partition violence, and her experiences in Canada. Mom was thoroughly a proud Canadian, she said, We worked hard, Canada gave us everything. She never returned to visit India once she stepped foot on Canadian soil. Our Mom was a real character: gregarious, enjoyed attending Kamloops Blazers and BC Lions games, passionate about ice hockey, could be heard swearing at professional wrestling villians on tv, opinionated about politics, with a green thumb, a go-getter, a feminist ahead of her time, outspoken, God-fearing, tough, she could put up a fence, knew how to pound a hammer, shovel heavy snow drifts, start her car to get to work in -40C temperatures. Many considered her to be a matriarch of the community. Mom cared deeply about her family and right to the end gave generously of her love, caring and assistance to us and to her grandchildren. Gurdev Kaur Sundhu was predeased by her husband (Rattan Singh 1978), and survived by her son Bill (Satwinder), daughter Sandra (John), grandchildren Ellora and Sachin, and one surviving sister Niamit whom she discovered after 72 years, in 2019. Funeral Service and Cremation is scheduled for August 23rd (attendance is limited due to COVID-19 restrictions). Live streaming of service at 10:00am PDT available at: copy and paste this link in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge and that will direct viewer to the streaming of the service. http://www.livememorialservices.com/Home/ServiceDetail/6605 A Ceremonial Sikh Phog will take place in Kamloops at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
