Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp 25.05.2021

We’re inviting supporters of the 1492 LBL auction to join us in a new auction group for the badass folks at the Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp Since Augus...t 2020, they’ve been asserting their rights to hold land-based language classes on their traditional territory in what is now Dundee, QC. Since starting, they’ve continued to face threats and harassment from colonial state forces for trying to teach language skills to their young people. Please support and show some love for the folks at the Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp by joining, sharing and inviting your people to the auction group!!! Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp Facebook Auction We’d especially love if all the wonderful crafters, makers, artists and amazing folks who have lent their skills in the past could come participate & share their talents once more!!! The auction start date is April 24th @ 7pm, so don’t miss out

Spring has arrived!! We have officially entered our 4th season at Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp. Although, it has not come without major resistance by the municipality of so called "Dundee, Quebec" and the newly appointed Quebec Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Ian Lafreniere. We are still here, still building, still teaching, still learning and still living. ... We are continuing to learn the lay of the land, and how the spring thaw affects the land around the camp. There was minor flooding of the road leading to camp, but has since subsided. So far, the area around camp has remained dry, and we are close to putting our first seeds in the ground, and beginning our first garden at Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp. Our young people have helped to tap some sugar maples around the camp grounds; thanks to everyone's generous donations, we have been able to purchase a complete sugar shack set up, and soon we will be able to make our own maple syrup. We are excited to see what spring time brings here at Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp. We would like to thank you all for your continued support, much love from our Kanienkehaka Land Back family

Update: The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, Canadas elected band council, has publicly stated their opposition to the Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp, for the second time. (The first attempt to remove us, was in the form of a petition adressing the St. Regis Iroquois Indians-Land Protectors- MCA choose to lump our camp in with this petition. The camp had nothing to do with the actions addressed in the petition. It was an attempt to divide our community, by implying the sign...atures on the petitions were in opposition of our camp. The petition was unsuccessful) Furthermore, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, believes the common lands their corporation purchased on Hopkins Point Road is privately owned property, and that our people need their permission to occupy the land to teach our children. (Under their Indian Act, Land purchased by band councils are considered "common lands") The Mayor of Dundee Quebec has attempted to physically stop us from accessing our lands in so called "Dundee" since her conversation with the Grand Chief of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, back In January Dundee is all leased lands, acknowledged through the recent land claim deal between Canada's band council- MCA- and Canada itself. Their deal was that we could purchase land from willing sellers and wait up to 30 years for the ATR process to make the land part of the reservation, and be compensated $240 million in back pay for unpaid leases, only if we surrendered our title to the lands in Dundee. Only 14% of voters accepted, which means 86% did not agree to this deal. We are a part of the 86%

Every once in a while my research brings up useful information. This map from 1778. When we hear talk of the Dundee surrender we know what Cornwallis wrote from his letter to Parker conceding the land was ours. https://collections.leventhalmap.org//commonwealth:z603vq5

Warning Graphic Material Week 21- As we approach our 6th month at Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp, we've hunkered down for the winter season. ... We continue to build our school house, and adjust our camp as the weather changes. The Salmon River has frozen over, allowing us to enjoy the ice and the easier access it gives us to the other side of the river. Our young people have been busy learning the Kaniehkehaka language, with our recent theme being about hunting, trapping and conducting ceremony. Soon we will be focusing on the ice and the activies, hobbies and survival skills that come with all of it's teachings. Recently we have had both the Surete Du Quebec and RCMP liasons reach out to the camp, asking for a sit down and inquiring on when we plan to leave. So far, no discussions or sit downs have been agreed upon with either agency. Nia:wen Kowa to everyone who has donated to our GoFundMe, raised monies and/or continue to support our efforts at Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp. You can donate to our GoFundMe at https://gofund.me/919caf4f

Wrapping up the year, celebrating 4 months at Kanienkehaka Land Back Language Camp. We had our first mini social, on our newly finished floors, inside one of our first structures. Pretty soon, comes midwinter, and all the songs, dances and ceremonies we have been working hard at learning, will be practiced at our land based language camp. ... We couldn't be more grateful to end the year still on the land, still practicing our teachings and learning alongside our young people. Niawen kowa for all of the continued support, we couldn't have made this a possibility without everyone's hard work and generosity. We look forward to what this winter season will bring .

Month 4- The snow has arrived Our young people did a great job tracking yesterday. They believe its a beaver, It could also be a muskrat. By being on the land everyday, our young people will soon learn the differences between beavers and muskrats. ... Our young people have also learned to identify multiple types of birds by being on the land. This is the time we make an effort to teach them the Kaniehkeha names for the wildlife they encounter, the ones who call this place home.
