Meet the Keeping the Fires Burning honoured guests. Martha Peet (Tookanacheak) will perform the lighting of the Qulliq. Martha Peet only had one name while growing up, Tookanacheak was her only name. Back then, there were no family names, just one name is given to a child at birth. Most often, it is a name of one of the grandparents of the child or an admired hunter or after an admired seamstress and a food preparer. See you virtually, at Keeping the Fires Burning. Keeping the Fires Burning and Ka Ni Kanichihk are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Petey Parisian and express our heartfelt condolences to the Parisian & Hotomani families. He will be missed and remembered for all of the gifts he shared with so many. We will remember his kind and generous spirit, his humility and his unwavering love for ceremony and community. For our Keeping the Fires Burning community Petey rendered the most beautiful honour song - that song came... right from the heart and touched the spirit. His voice literally made the hair on the back of your head stand up, send shivers down your spine, bring the tears to your eyes - it left you breathless. Now he sings in paradise. We will honour Petey’s life during our 20th Anniversary Keeping the Fires Burning event on June 21, 2021.
