Myth: Flickering Lights Equal a Short The term, short, seems to be used for any electrical weirdness going on. A short is a very specific thing. It means electrical current has found a path around its intended load; usually directly to ground (like a short cut). This is almost always caused by improper wiring, or damaged cables or equipment.... Unrestricted current is allowed to flow in the circuit which would cause massive over-heating of the wire and catastrophic failure perhaps a fire. To prevent this, the circuit breaker or fuse detects the build-up of heat and immediately opens the circuit thus stopping the current. The process is instantaneous. That is a short. If your lights flicker it’s probably a loose connection.

Have you considered which type of bulb functions best for your kitchen or how about that dark garage.

Did you know..... We are a qualified installer in the Residential & Commercial Solar Program. In 2019, the program was expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our province by about half a million tonnesthe equivalent of taking 70,000 passenger vehicles off the road. Energy Efficiency Alberta has been closely monitoring responses since the program launched in April 2017 and it’s clear that Albertans are eager to build big and install large solar systems, which is g...reat news for advancing solar energy in the province. Based on this data and stakeholder feedback, Energy Efficiency Alberta is making program changes to boost participation and help ensure solar incentives are funded at intended levels for the size of projects in the Alberta market. When solar is installed in a community, it’s a very visible demonstration of how easy solar energy is to install and maintain, leading to even more solar installations. 1) Incentives for residential solar systems will now be $0.90 per watt, increased from $0.75. 2) Businesses will continue to receive $0.75 per watt; however, the maximum payable incentive amount has increased to $1 million, up from $500,000 (to a maximum of 35% of project costs, increased from 25%). 3) Non-profit and charitable organizations will receive an increased incentive of $1.00 per watt, up from $0.75; to a maximum of 35% of total project cost or $1 million. 4) All applications currently submitted to the program (submitted Part 1) will receive the new, higher incentives. 5) To recognize their important early adopter role, all residential participants enrolled since the start of the program (April 2017) will receive a $400 bonus rebate towards any eligible energy-efficiency upgrade in the recently launched Home Energy Plan program. Home Energy Plan program. A detailed email outlining how to take advantage of this offer will be sent to all past residential solar participants.

Common Electrical Myth: My Older Home Needs Rewiring This myth is usually stated: My home was built in the 1920’s or ’30s, so I need to have it rewired. Well, not necessarily.... First of all, understand what rewiring the house means. Electrical cables are running through all your walls, ceilings, floors, attic, basement and/or crawl space. The cost to replace all of that would be very expensive. Wiring doesn’t expire like milk. If it has not been damaged, then it’s best left alone with a few exceptions: Knob and tube wiring: If you have this type of wiring it should be replaced whenever possible. For example during renovations or where it can be accessed (attics, basements, etc) Overloaded circuits: Older homes were not designed to carry the electrical load we are demanding of them today. The fix for this is to run additional branch circuits to high use areas like the kitchen or for equipment which should be on dedicated circuits: Microwaves, dishwashers, window A/Cs, etc. Upgrade your service: You should have at least a 100 amp service for your home. And if you have fuses it should be changed to a breaker panel.

DON'T BE THIS GUY! BE PREPARED. You’ve renewed your passport, bought your plane tickets, and researched your destination; now it’s time to prepare for the little details of traveling overseas. One is making sure you have the right equipment needed to use any electrical devices you’re bringing on your trip. That means making sure you have the right travel adapter and, if necessary, the right voltage converter. An electric converter changes the voltage of your electronic device. An outlet adapter changes the shape of your plug, not the electrical voltage, allowing you to plug appliances into wall outlets in countries with different-shaped plugs than your own.

No Fuse, Big Problem Just because it fits, doesn't mean it's a fuse. Yes, copper tubing will conduct electricity, but this is VERY dangerous! And I feel an eerie presence of the ghost of Charles Darwindon’t let it happen to you!

A common mistake that people make with D.Y.I. electrical projects is to choose the Wrong Circuit Breaker To help you understand which electrical protection goes where, consider what each type of breaker was designed to do. Standard Circuit Breaker... Circuit breakers protect home electrical wiring and equipment like furnaces, air conditioners, dryers and stoves. Standard circuit breakers are better at protecting wiring and equipment than preventing fires and protecting people. That’s why they have largely been replaced by GFCIs and AFCIs. There are only a few places left where standard circuit breakers can be used, typically for large home electrical appliances. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) protect people in areas where they are likely to be using small appliances and where water is present. GFCI breakers and outlets have been around for awhile, and most people know they’re required in bathrooms, kitchens and outdoors. But our experts are still finding home electrical violations, especially in garages, crawl spaces, storage/work areas in unfinished basements, wet bars (within six feet of a sink) and sump pumps. GFCIs need to be readily accessible to be reset. This means they shouldn’t be installed on the ceiling or buried under a hydro massage tub without an access panel. Arc fault circuit interrupter Arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) prevent fires in living areas where appliance cords are prone to be pinched or crimped, or chewed by pets. They used to be required only on bedroom circuits, but the Electrical Code now requires AFCI protection in all living areas. They’re equipped with sophisticated electronics that can detect an arcing condition (like in a frayed lamp cord), which may not be detected by a standard circuit breaker until after a fire has started. AFCI protection is not just required for new construction. It’s also required where branch-circuit wiring is modified, replaced or extended into existing homes.

A common household mistake is to crowd a Service Panel A service panel requires a working clearance that’s 30-in. wide, three feet deep and six feet eight inches high in the national electric code. A good rule of thumb: If you can’t park a refrigerator in front of the panel, you don’t have enough working space. These clearances are designed to protect the person working on the panel. It’s difficult to work safely when your arms are pinned to your sides. The panel also needs to be readily accessible, meaning the area should not be used as storage space or require a ladder for access.
