During the concept phase of the Biodome Migration project, interviews with more than 70 people between the ages of 7 and 91 highlighted the participants’ vivid memories, passions, experiences and significance of nature. Camping is the activity that the majority of respondents mentioned as being the nature activity par excellence, whether it be highly organized family activity or wilderness camping. The memory of camping is most often associated with fun, family and sharing, e...xcept when it was experienced during a severe storm or thunderstorm. CAMPING @ ARSENAL - The artistic process for the creation of an ephemeral work within the Arsenal Contemporary Art Gallery begins with the deconstruction of the representations associated with camping to extract the essence of the elements that make it up. The project then proposes to reconstruct a camping experience through the solicitation of the senses to create an emotional connection among visitors. The participatory reinterpretation of camping seeks to take advantage of this appeal to the senses so that the emotions and memories that each person carries are brought back to consciousness. Like the Biodôme, integrated into the velodrome - heritage site of the 1976 Olympics - the Arsenal contemporary art gallery is a significant place, an industrial vestige steeped in history. Both buildings were originally associated with the urban ecosystem. Today, they are two spaces in which new interventions and installations aim to bring visitors closer to nature and art through emotional experiences.

New project: Berson The Berson project is positioned on a site of great significance both in terms of the artistic evolution of the Montreal metropolis and of the development of the identity of Saint-Laurent Boulevard. Inhabited by the Berson family and its tombstone business for many generations, the site has also hosted the workshops of distinguished artists such as Stanley Lewis and Edith Brodkin as well as more recently two unique murals by graffiti artist Phlegm. This ri...ch past is at the heart of our current proposal for a mixed-use building deeply rooted in its history. The site is located in a bustling stretch of Montreal’s main street St. Laurent Blvd. across from landmarks such as Schwartz’s Deli. It is characterized by a unique square-shaped lot, which was developed in the late 19th century with live/work workshops at the rear of the lot and was never expanded to the streetscape. This unique condition plays an integral role in the development of the Berson’s mixed-use project that picks up on its typology and reinterprets it for an updated use, perpetuating its story by engaging in a renewed dialogue with the street and its occupants. The stone, a memory of the site, is the anchor of the project. The expression of the horizontal strata is a reminder of the granite quarry, of the heritage of the Jewish Berson family and its practice, as well as of the sculptors of the early 20th century. The front courtyard, which opens onto St. Laurent Boulevard, is the result of a work in the masses. The public square thus created gradually opens out in tiers and invites the public to use it as a meeting place while allowing for the preservation and the celebration of the existing art mural on its South side.
