Join me this Thursday for a chat about downsizing and decluttering!

Kaos Solutions 10.05.2021

April fools is over and it’s time to get serious about #downsizing and #decluttering. Don’t let your legacy be overwhelming to your kids...they don’t want all your stuff, but often are too scared to tell you that. So I am telling you. Ask them what they may want but PLEASE be okay if they don’t want much of it.

Anyone in the greater Moncton area looking to get rid of those reusable items sitting in a room waiting to leave the house...today and tomorrow are great days to finally move them on out.

Today is National Dress Day. We celebrate the most versatile and fun article of clothing there is the dress! Fashion designer Ashley Lauren founded the day to help pay homage to dresses and the magical moments that happen when we wear them. I remember the dresses I wore to my prom, first job interview, first date, competing in a pageant, my first red carpet event, the list goes on, she says. This is a fun day to cherish and celebrate those memories. As you cherish and c...elebrate all those amazing dress moments...remember that you do not have to have them all still hanging in your closet. Enjoy the memories, the pictures, the feelings but allow yourself the freedom to let them go! Is it time for you to go through your dresses and let some of them go? Do that today on National Dress Day and donate them so they can make memories with someone else...not just your closet! #nationaldressday #letitgo #declutter #downsizing

Today is National Old Stuff Day. What is the oldest thing in your home that you use regularly? Contrary to popular belief, as an organizer I do not preach getting rid of all your stuff....just the stuff that no longer serves you and you no longer use. But I am all for using and repurposing old things to be used regularly. The oldest thing in my house that I can say I use EVERYDAY is a buffet that we inherited from my husband's grandparents. Not sure of the actual age but ...probably close to 100 years old. It no longer holds unused china and glassware in a dining room but has been repurposed to the main entrance of our home and holds everyday items like hats, mitts, scarves and my purse. It is honoured and used all the time. That is what stuff is for!

Big events in life often give us the push we need to sift through memories and memorabilia we keep. Expecting a new grandson is one of those big events. Sifting through our daughters box of baby stuff...letting go of stuff that really doesn’t mean anything and oh and ahing over the sweet little things that do. Sometimes we keep things we think will be cherished later...but not everything is and it’s okay to let things go now...or later...and it’s okay to let your loved ones... decide to let things go too. The things we found in the box were what I ‘thought’ might be cherished 20 years ago. Only a few things were, but the ones that my daughter had memories about or felt a connection too were what mattered...they were kept for her. The rest we let go!!

Today’s downsizing story: how many of you have kept things because you spent a lot of money on it and you feel guilty or conflicted about letting it go? Can you top this price....This box of video files cost me over $100,000 and a good year or more of my life. It was way before you could grab your phone and just record. We created and produced several organizing videos from these raw videos. We hired professionals. We put everything into them. And then they never really sold.... We lost a lot of money even though they were good and a bit funny. We even won an award for them. It just did not work. Now I find this box in my closet with the remnants of this dream. I am sweating about actually letting this all go. Finally admitting I am never going to do anything with them. It’s been 12 years. Gulp! That’s a long time to hold onto a dead dream. So today I look at all I learned from the experience. I am grateful for the people I worked with, the lessons learned and the fun that was had. And I’m going to let them go. I’m going to free up space. Thanks for the experience, time to let go. PS there may have been tears in this process too. It’s okay. Feel the feelings and move on.#downsizing #kaosSolutions #letitgo #thehomeedit See more

It’s officially official! All conditions met so we are really moving. T-minus 16 days to get this place packed and downsized. Good thing I am a professional at this.

THIS ONE IS HARD! Downsizing and packing my library is tough for me. I love my books and letting them go is tougher than most things. But I know I have to be honest about what I can keep so I have to pick my favourites to make the cut and edit out the rest. Deep breath! #downsizing #thehomeedit #kaossolutions #movingwoes

Saturday night fun! This one was hard for me I will admit, as I LOVE my books! Had to make some hard decisions but managed to reduce the amount a bit (this was my second edit to my bookcases). So library is now packed and a pile of books are ready to find new homes. Sometimes when going through this process you just have to take a deep breath, be really honest about what you REALLY NEED AND LOVE...and let some of it go.
