At a meeting held on November 10th, the Kapuskasing Curling Club’s Board of Directors reluctantly concluded that it would have to cancel its 2020-2021 curling season. The COVID-19 pandemic created the perfect storm that forced the executive to make this difficult decision. Financially the club was looking at a large deficit because of a 30% decrease in membership, the inability to hold fund-raising events and bonspiels, the inability to rent out the facility and the difficul...ty in approaching local business for sponsorship funding. Participation wise, the decrease in membership meant that one league did not even have two teams while two other leagues were close to or at 3 team numbers ...! Finally, the distancing measures that must be followed meant that most of the social aspects of the game were severely limited and important adjustments had to be made to the rules of the on-ice game. We all hope for a return to normal in time for the 2021-2022 season. Lors d'une réunion tenue le 10 novembre, le conseil d'administration du Club de Curling de Kapuskasing a conclu, à contrecœur, qu'il devait annuler sa saison de curling 2020-2021. La pandémie COVID-19 a créé la tempête parfaite qui obligea l'exécutif à prendre cette décision difficile. Financièrement, le club faisait face à un déficit important en raison d'une diminution de 30% de ses membres, il ne pouvait plus organiser des événements de collecte de fonds et des bonspiels, il ne pouvait plus louer ses installations et pouvait difficilement approcher les entreprises locales afin d’obtenir un financement de parrainage. Du côté de la participation, la diminution des effectifs signifiait qu'une ligue n'avait même pas deux équipes alors que deux autres ligues prévoyait à peine trois équipes ...! Enfin, les mesures de distanciation à suivre signifiaient que la plupart des aspects sociaux du jeu étaient sévèrement limités et des ajustements importants devaient être apportés aux règles du jeu sur la glace. Nous espérons tous un retour à la normale à temps pour la saison 2021-2022.

The Kapuskasing Curling Club directors held a meeting last night and determined that the Kap Curling Club will not open for the 2020-21 season.

Earlier this month, the Kap Curling Club E-mailed background information and a Return-to-Curling survey to its adult members who curled last season. The goal was to determine if those intending on playing in the proposed January to April 2021 season would generate enough income to make such a season viable. If so, then the club’s younger members would then be surveyed. The results of the survey showed that approximately 30% of last year’s adult members would not... be returning and that the 52 who indicated they would return would generate about $10,000 in income. The club optimistically projects that it would need some $40,000 to finance club operations next season. The board has decided to postpone a final decision on the 2020-21 season for another month. Depending on how the second wave of COVID-19 affects us over the next few weeks, the executive may decide to look at other funding and recruitment options. In early November, you will be advised by E-mail of the final decision taken by the members of the board. Il y a quelques semaines, le Club de Curling de Kap a envoyé par courriel des renseignements au sujet de ce que pourrait être sa prochaine saison ainsi qu’un sondage au sujet du Retour au Jeu. Le sondage a seulement été envoyé aux membres adultes qui ont participé au curling l’an dernier car on voulait savoir s’il y aurait suffisamment de participant(e)s pour justifier, financièrement, une saison qui se déroulerait de janvier à avril 2021. Le sondage a indiqué qu’environ 30% des membres adultes de l’an dernier ne reviendront pas et que les 52 qui ont indiqué vouloir revenir généreraient environ 10 000$ en revenus. Selon une projection optimiste, le club aurait besoin de 40 000$ pour financer la prochaine saison. Le conseil d’administration prendra la décision finale au sujet de la saison 2020-21 vers la fin octobre. Dépendant de comment la deuxième vague COVID-19 se développe, les membres de l’exécutif décideront peut-être de poursuivre d’autres options de financement et de recrutement. Au début de novembre, vous connaîtrez par courriel la décision finale prise par les membres de l’exécutif.

Congrats to all the Kap curlers. The two Little Rock teams had to face each other in a D semi final, and the winner went on to win the D. For the two developmental bantam teams the girls won A and the boys won B.
