Pelvic floor relaxation is necessary to recieve penetration during intercourse. S3X and BIRTH are similar in that both require the pelvic floor to open and soften. Tip of the day: S3X is like birth! Both require mindful breath and pelvic floor awareness.... Many of my patients habitually hold their breath throughout the day so they are not mindful of what an effortless full inhale/full exhale actually feels like. Here is something to try: Frequently through your day practice mindfully inhaling the aroma of your morning coffee, cookies, fresh baked bread, soap in the shower, flowers or the fresh Spring air. NOW: I want you to sense your pelvic floor and perineum soften and relax as you inhale. Upon exhalation your pelvic floor will subtly tighten. Place one hand on your perineum to help feel this sensation. Alternatively, you can sit on a therapy ball and notice the gentle rise and fall of your pelvic floor against the domed surface of the ball. Note if you feel more aware of your breath and areas of muscle tension through the whole day. Comment below or DM me with a if you notice just how often you are clenching or breath holding today! #pelvicfloorpower #karephysio #prenatal #postpartumfitness #postpartumbody #pelvicfloorfitness #kegel #pregnancy #kegelexercises #birthpreparation #sexualhealth #mindfulsex #pleasureduringsex #kegelsmatter #menopausesexlife #postpartumbody #postpartumjourney #wiredbuttired #pelvichealth #pelvicphysio #okanagan #kelownaphysio #kelownamoms

This week is World Doula Week. Send love and support to all doulas this week as they are critical in supporting so many pregnant and postpartum families in our community. During this past year with the Corona crisis many doulas struggled to provide much needed care to their pregnant clients.... Birth is a stressful time and a time when birthing families need their doulas the most for physical, emotional and mental support. Check out this podcast interview that I did with Mel from @mommyberrieshealth on her new podcast called The Pelvic Floor Project Repost from @mommyberrieshealth Episode #2: Don't Wait Until After Baby for Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy ... The pelvic floor is less of a mystery these days, but for many moms to be there is still a mystery whether or not it can be beneficial during pregnancy. In this episode I sat down with a fellow pelvic health physical therapist Corinne Wade from @karephysio. We discussed some of the many benefits that pelvic floor physical therapy can have for a mom before baby comes. Including: Pain - I am experiencing symptoms that affect my day to day movements or exercise Proactive - I want to support my body during pregnancy, prepare for birth and have a postpartum recovery plan Previous experience - I did this once before and I want to improve my experience this time Our goal for this episode is to give you a taste of how we can support you and then leave it up to you to decide if this sounds like it would be the right fit for you. Did you see a pelvic health PT during your pregnancy? Research shows there isn’t just one perfect labour position. I educate my prenatal patients on the the most optimal possible labour positions for their OWN unique body. If I have a patient with knee arthritis then maybe deep squatting or kneeling during labour won’t be comfortable.... If they have a labral tear then certain positions won’t be safe or comfortable for that hip joint. I always assess my patients’ hip, knee, pelvic and spinal mobility to help come up with as many labour positions that may be possible during their birth. Being prepared for different scenarios, feeling safe and empowered are the goals I help my patients achieve so they’ll have many tools going into childbirth. #karephysio #birthlikeaboss #birth #labouranddelivery #prenatal #womenshealth #empoweringwomen #pelvicphysio #pelvicfloor #birthprep #kelownamomstobe #kelownamoms #kelownabc #kelownabc #okanagan

We ALL need reminders that your body is a miracle. When we are in pain or feel as though our bodies have let us down, reminding ourselves how magical and how resilient the human body is can be empowering. I often need to remind my physio patients that they are stronger than they think. I need to remind them that the human body is capable of amazing things.....sometimes it just needs guidance and support.... If you are in pain or feeling as though your body is broken, try to remember a time in your life that your body did something amazing for you.....was it birthing a child, a sporting event or your body healing from a previous illness? A recent systematic review estimates that up to 80% of women may experience some degree of postpartum sexual dysfunction. After having a baby, new moms have a lot to deal with caring for the newest addition, sleep deprivation, hormonal changes, physical issues/pain and for a lot of new moms, sexual dysfunction as well.

Happy International Women’s Day! This is a picture of my Mom who was a champion fencer in France. I love how laser focused, fierce and powerful she can be with her fencing epee sword.... This weekend there are SO many amazing speakers advocating for better Endometriosis research, education, advocacy and care for endometriosis patients around the world. March is endometriosis awareness month. There are many myths about the proper and effective treatment of endometriosis.... It breaks my heart that so many patients are told that their endometriosis can be simply cured with menopause, pregnancy or by having a hysterectomy. This is not true. Endometriosis is a complex disease that needs a multidisciplinary approach. Follow @endometriosissummit and @drsalliept for the most up to date and cutting edge endometriosis information. 15 yrs ago I was 2 weeks overdue with my daughter. Even though I prepared for the birth as best as I could with all my pelvic floor physio knowledge, I still ended up with a stage 4 posterior prolapse and a 4th degree perineal tear. I help educate and prepare Mama’s and their partners for birth.....I help them to prepare for many possible birth scenarios but I also empower them with the knowledge that there is no perfect birth. All births are beautifully imperfect.... Being able to heal from what ever birth process you have endured can be challenging and it may take years. I didn’t get the surgeries I needed until 5 years after my first child was born. I’m thankful for everything that happened as all the challenges made me emotionally stronger and I’m so grateful and thankful for my 2 kids. They were totally worth it #karephysio #birth #prolapse #incontinence #birthlikeaboss #pelvicphysio #kelownaphysio #kelownabc #birthprep #birthteam

Thanks to this informative Repost from @jillkrapfmd. Endometriosis is a condition that affects 1 in 10. The focus has historically been on painful periods, but we know that endometriosis affects physical, mental, and social aspects of sexual health and quality of life. Here are some ways that endometriosis affects sexual health:... Studies show that endometriosis affects all domains of sexual function, including desire, arousal, orgasm, sexual satisfaction, and pain, leading to sexual dysfunction in up to 75% of advanced/chronic cases of endometriosis (Pluchino et al. 2016). Issues with sex life- 48.5% of patients reported that endometriosis caused issues with their sex life and this was associated with a negative influence on their relationship (Fagervold et al. 2009) Pain with intercourse (dyspareunia)- 47% of endometriosis patients reported dyspareunia, this was the 3rd most common symptom after painful periods and pelvic pain (WERF EndoCost study; De Graaff et al. 2013). Pain can be superficial (at the vaginal opening, called provoked vestibulodynia) or deeper in the pelvis. Endometriosis patients had a 40% prevalence of pelvic floor tenderness and dyspareunia was associated with pelvic floor tenderness (Yong et al. 2014). Up to 50% of endometriosis patients had other overlapping pain conditions, mostly interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (Cervigni and Natale 2014; Yong et al. 2014). Studies have shown an association between endometriosis and depression, anxiety, and increased stress. Younger endometriosis patients have a higher rate of developing depression and anxiety (Chen et al. 2016). It is essential to understand how endometriosis affects the person as a whole. This includes quality of life and sexual health. Profound post from from @drsalliept who is the co-founder and director of the @endometriosissummit. The summit is March 5-7. Grateful to @drsalliept for being a crusader and advocate for teens and women suffering from endometriosis:... They said just take birth control pills. I woke in the middle of the night over and over again taking handfuls of Advil just to be able to go to school in the morning. I missed practice. I missed dances. I missed tests. I was bloated and in pain. I had insufferable migraines. I had pelvic pain. I bled on all my clothes. I used tampons so big my friends made fun of me. It wasnt a happy period. From friends and family I got an eye roll when I was having trouble just getting thru the day with my period. And the doctors- if the believed me at all bc teens are just attention seeker right? They told me to take an aspirin or have some Tylenol. Or here have these birth control pills. My delicate system must need to be regulated as I am developing. My stomach aches are unrelated. They never said the word endometriosis. They never said that the birth control pills just cover the disease. They never said there were other options because they never even said I had a disease that I needed to know about. It is time to say. It is time to talk to teens. And say treating endometriosis needs more than birth control pills. Endo Summit Live Feb. 22nd was all about teen endometriosis; check @endometriosissummit on Facebook for the recording. #endometriosis #endometriosisawareness #adenomyosis #pelvicpain #menstrualpain #painfulsex #hernia #infertility #fertility #ttc #ttcsisters #endometriosissurgery

Most women with Endometriosis suffer from this disease for 10 years or more before they get an accurate diagnosis. The pelvic and abdominal pain from Endo is debilitating. I see teens and women in my physio clinic that can't go to school or have had to stop working and are devastated mentally and emotionally because they can't enjoy activities with their friends, families and in their communities. They often have excruciating pain with intercourse, so their intimate relations...hips suffer too. Many women suffer in silence with pelvic pain thinking that pain with periods or pain with sex is normal. I want to break that silence and transmute the misunderstanding and misinformation about Endometriosis. If you suffer from symptoms related to Endometriosis then see a pelvic floor physiotherapist. #karephysio #pelvicfloorpower #endometriosis #pelvicpain #intimacy #relationships #infertility #womenshealth #chronicpain #knowledgeispower #endoawareness #pelvicfloorphysio #painfulperiods #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy #kelownaphysio #kelownamoms #kelownabc #okanaganliving

Looking for that perfect book for your partner’s stocking? This is an excellent book on cultivating female pleasure and arousal written from the perspective of a man. She Comes First is described as the thinking man’s guide to pleasuring a woman and is written by sex therapist, Ian Kerner.... Most women I talk to feel embarrassed or ashamed telling their partner what feels good during intercourse and during intimate play. This book gives excellent practical advice, tips and strategies that are easy to follow. Many of my pelvic physio patients struggle with enjoying intimacy at various times in their life. This is common especially during times of stress (ie. Covid) or can be due to big life changes such as having a baby or going through hormonal changes like menopause. 16% of men over the age of 40 in Canada leak urine. Yes, men can leak too! I treat men who have had prostate surgery and help them regain their ability to control their urine after surgery. Men are often relieved to find out they are cancer free after they’ve had surgery for prostate cancer.... Sadly though their quality of life post-op can be significantly impacted by erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. If men still can’t regain control of their urine after doing a well designed pelvic floor exercise program, I’m able to offer men the possibility of trialing a discreet and convenient urethral insert that can successfully keep men dry without the use of pads. Pelvic floor strengthening exercises are always the first line of defense for men that have had a radical prostatectomy but sometimes TOO much damage occurs during surgery and this is where a urethral insert called the Contino can be a lifesaver for men. If you or perhaps a male you know is struggling with incontinence even after doing a regime of pelvic floor exercises then the Contino insert might help. If you have questions about about the Contino medical device which is licensed by Health Canada, send me a message or check out https://mycontino.com/ for further information. #karephysio #menshealth #leakybladder #menshealthawareness #prostatecancer #prostate #incontinence #staydry #prostatesurgery #pelvichealth #kegels #kegelsformen #pelvicfloorexercise #pelvicfloorphysio #kegelexercises #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy #contino #mycontino #kelownaphysio #kelownabc #okanagan #kelownamen #okanaganlife

Many of my patients admit to holding their breath......as though they are waiting to exhale. This can be due to pain, emotional stress, habitual or due to posture changes such as during pregnancy. I tell my patients no breath.....no core!. The diaphragm is one of your most important core muscles. It needs to move to work with your pelvic floor muscles.... Here’s a tip: Try blowing a bubble with chewing gum. This helps elicit a slower, longer controlled exhale. If you don’t have chewing gum, try blowing up a party balloon. Notice your breath as you blow up the balloon. Try this out and comment below! I’m curious what you notice. Movember is the month to create awareness about Men’s Health.....especially awareness about Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer and suicide risk. On a daily basis in my physio clinic I witness men who are struggling physically and emotionally. They may have chronic pelvic pain, erectile health problems, urinary incontinence and other symptoms that may be very embarrassing or difficult to discuss. During Movember let’s remember that there are many barriers to men receiving the ...treatment they need. The barriers are multifaceted but what I see needs to change immediately is decreasing the stigma and embarrassment regarding pelvic health for men. Did you know therapeutic ultrasound can be used to treat blocked milk ducts? The sound waves of the ultrasound can penetrate through the breast tissue to unclog the blockage and improve milk flow. Ultrasound is a comfortable treatment and can also help decrease pain, decrease inflammation and hopefully prevent the milk duct blockage turning into mastitis or an infection.... If you have infective mastitis you may feel flu-like symptoms such as pain, fever and body aches. Book an appointment at Kare Physio as soon as you feel blocked duct symptoms starting such as an area of the breast changing and starting to feel lumpy, hard or tender. Having a diagnosis of prostate cancer can be devastating. Men that have a radical prostatectomy surgery then often have to deal with with symptoms such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Many prostate cancer survivors find these symptoms obviously negatively impact their self esteem, confidence and sense of manhood. Depression and risk for suicide are higher in men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Suicide risk is especially high in the first 18 mon...ths after diagnosis. Early detection is of paramount importance for prostate cancer. If you are a man with a family history of prostate cancer then get your PSA levels checked. PSA levels can be controversial but many of my patients have been able to more quickly detect their cancer by a change in PSA levels from year to year. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is an important part of rehabilitation and needed for regaining optimal function after prostate surgery. Men need to work their pelvic floor muscles too! My favourite cue to help men accurately locate and activate their deep pelvic floor muscles is to pull your nuts to your guts! This is my favourite cue for men and I learned it from the amazing @drjomiliosphysio.... Many men inaccurately attempt to activate their inner core and pelvic floor muscles by bracing, breath holding, bearing downwards or clenching their gluts. At Kare Physio I train men how to effectively activate AND to be able to fully relax their pelvic floor muscles.
