Karen's Cleaning Services 13.11.2020

So this has been shared by my family members who currently live in Canada in the province where this is happening. This is a real glimpse at what it’s like when... medicine is a socialized government funded program and all of sudden the budget gets cut. So for everyone who wants to jump on the socialized medicine bandwagon, keep this story in mind. No, I’m not interested in arguing about it so please don’t. I’m simply trying to provide some real life context of what can happen and what is happening in Nova Scotia right now. Here is the story: So I don't usually post a lot on Facebook but this really needs to have some attention. The doctor shortage in Digby and the ER closures are getting to be at a serious level. We just moved back here in October and our daughter and her husband moved here as well. A week ago Monday she had to be taken to the ER in Digby as she was doubled over in pain. There happened to be a doctor there that day. She was sent to Yarmouth by private care in a snow storm to have an ultrasound done. He told her to wait there for the results. She was told there that she had to drive all the way back to Digby in the snow storm to get the results. They wouldn't give them to her. So my husband drove her back to Digby. They couldn't find anything on the ultrasound, so they were talking about sending her all the way back to Yarmouth for a CT scan. Seriously!!! Couldn't have done that while she was down there. Anyway she didn't end up going back down but was sent home. Okay. She started the next day with the flu and cold that is going around. She is diabetic and asthmatic. So over the course of the next week she's slowly been getting worse and worse until yesterday she was having trouble breathing. Her husband had to work so I was texting back and forth with her to make sure she was okay. We live in Brighton, they live in Deep Brook. So around seven thirty last evening I texted to see how she was and she said not good. I think I'm going to pass out. So my husband and I rushed up there. She was having difficulty breathing, was weak from throwing up so much. Couldn't keep anything down. She was getting dehydrated. Our original plan was to take her to Annapolis ER as Digby was closed yet again for three days straight. I called Annapolis and guess what they were closed too. So I called 9-1-1. They sent an ambulance. By the time they got there she was having a panic attack because she couldn't breathe. Her fingers and toes were cold and she was complaining they were numb. The paramedics were awesome. But said they needed to put an IV in and were taking her all the way to Middleton Hospital as it was open. They couldn't start an IV until they had her in the ambulance and then they were taking her up to Middleton. We left there around 8:40 p.m. to go get her husband at work at 9 and take him to Middleton. By the time we got to Middleton the snow was coming down and she was in the waiting room of the hospital. Paramedics told the nurse in the ER they couldn't find a vein in her arm so they couldn't put an IV in. Nurse said no problem we'll send someone out to put one in as she needs fluids and probably an antibiotic. Paramedics left and she was left in the waiting room along with 10 or so other people. No one came to put an IV in. Someone came eventually and gave her two oral antibiotic pills to take which she threw up two minutes after they gave them to her. In the meantime we have headed home and left her husband with her figuring they would put an IV in and we'd pick them up in the morning. We drove home at 11:30 at night in blizzard conditions. Got home and got a call at 1:50 a.m. that they were sending her home and my husband had to go back and pick them up. Doctor came in and prescribed antibiotics and inhaler. She had no IV, no chest x-rays, zilch. Something is serious wrong her and needs to be dealt with. I've called Gordon Wilson's office, was told he's in Halifax and will call me back. I called Department of Heath's office in Halifax. This needs to be shared as much as we can and we need to get the attention of the Department of Health and get this dire situation dealt with. I know Digby is not the only town in this situation but if we don't start bombarding these guys with phone calls, emails etc. we are going to be in a world of hurt. Someone has to do something soon.
