Echo House | Echo House is a large-scale renovation of a rundown Victorian. To achieve our clients’ seemingly paradoxical request for a loft-like home with spaces as private as the former Victorian ones, we had to think vertical. - The study, den and book vault are designed as distinct volumes suspended inside the larger, four-storey volume. Hill-Maheux Cottage | The idea of etched landscapes is a key theme in the Hill-Maheux Cottage in Quebec, Canada beginning with the exterior, where the structure’s strong, linear lines play against the organic forms of the wooded setting. Inside, the ceiling is surfaced with a quilt of steel plates inherited from a printmaker friend, many of which have been engraved with landscapes. Finally, the home’s exterior panels feature a reflective pattern of abstracted reeds, incised in such a way as to sit dormant until sunlight falls directly on them. Westboro Home | Resting on a narrow lot with strict code limitations on side windows and a steep difference in grade between adjacent properties, Westboro Home achieves a remarkable degree of spaciousness and light. The entire home is designed around a two-storey, light-filled raised garden courtyard. Stacey-Turley Residence | At Kariouk Architects, much of our home design explores creative ways to let natural light into interior spaces. The Stacey-Turley Residence is no exception. We started by setting the home as far back as possible within a shaped landscape, effectively turning the basement into a tall volume of space that captures light from the front garden.
