I'm a sucker for baby things with little animal ears. My kids had the hoodies, snow suits, tiny toques... you name it! There's just something so darn cute about a baby with tiny animal ears - don't you agree? I love when I'm staging these kinds of shots, I slip the little bonnet onto baby's head, the immediate reactions from the parents melts my heart - EVERY time. I did it during our newborn sessions. And every newborn I've photographed in this adorable little bonnet... thei...r parents have done the same. When this little guy's mom told me that they wanted ot have a few antlers included in their session, I knew I had to bring along this little fawn bonnet. What do you think? I had the pleasure of meeting this little guy and his parents this past weekend. They had some great inspiration photos and props that they wanted to have incorporated into his session - this antler was one of those! I'm happy to collaborate with my clients to help make their vision comes to life - so long as the poses can be done safely. What you don't see in this photo is that I have supports underneath the antler to keep it sturdy so that I wouldn't shift or rock under bab...y's weight. I also had supports under baby to keep him in the right position. There are a few soft layers between him and the prop to ensure his delicate skin didn't come into contact with the rough edges of the weathered antler. And finally, dad was very close by, acting as my spotter in case baby happened to shift while I snapped this precious photo. If I'm asked to do any poses that I'm not comfortable with - or baby doesn't seem to want to do, I won't do it and I won't force it. It's important that, just like a birth plan, myself and my clients need to be flexible. Baby's safety is the first priority and I can assure you, we will still get some amazing images, even if they're not exactly what you had your heart set on. Siblings. I love capturing these sweet moments of older kids with their new, baby sibling. Every child adapts to a new baby differently. With younger kids (toddlers), there are certain safety precautions that need to be taken when photographing them with their baby brother or sister. Being able to capture perfectly candid precious moments like this, though is a big part of why I do what I do. This is why I have come to LOVE doing in-home sessions. Sure, I'd love to be able to... work out of a studio someday, but honestly - there's nothing quite like the authentic moments you get from being able to photograph kids in their familiar and safe space. Alpacas are my favorite. I'm not really sure when this happened. Perhaps it started with "The Emperor's New Groove" came out and quickly became my favorite movie (yes, I realize it's about llamas and not alpacas). As a kid, first it was seals, then dolphins, then toucans... now it's alpacas. The best part - I live close enough to some to be able to visit and interact with them! This was a pretty amazing day! Getting to be up close with the alpacas, petting them (at least the ...ones who would let us), and getting to kiss a llama - yep, my heart was full. This little guy was so cute. I love how it looks like he's smiling for the photo and how cute his eyes are, peeking out from all that curly, fluffy fleece. I think photographing alpacas is one of my new favorite things. I sure hope he doesn't outgrow this photogenic state. I've heard that photographers' kids either get "photographer's-kid-syndrome" (and are the most difficult to try to get pictures of)... or they're a dream. As it stands, both of our kids still like to be photographed and I love capturing these precious moments. I had hoped to do a 365 Challenge this year, where I took a picture of our family and our life every day for a year. The first 6 weeks went pretty well, but in all h...onestly, then it started to feel mundane. I got behind in editing the daily photos. And it just didn't feel "special"; it felt forced. So I stopped. Initially, it felt a little like failure - like I couldn't even manage to keep up with one simple task of one photo each day. But honestly, the more I thought about it, the better I felt. I want to capture genuine moments. Should I be taking more pictures of my family - yep! But, when it starts to feel forced, when I feel like I'm chasing or needing to "construct" moments for memories... it loses it's spark. And I lose the passion. I want to capture genuine moments - of my own family and for my clients. Sometimes there's a method to it, but if or when it starts to feel forced - that's my cue that we need to switch things up. And that's why I decided to not put so much pressure on myself to chase a single photo-worthy moment of each day and to just grab my camera when the moment strikes.
