#DIDYOUKNOW I thought we live in a country that regulates everything but when it comes to our personal care industry that is not the case. Companies are allowed to use harmful ingredients and make their own judgments about safety. Did you know Canada has banned over 600 questionable ingredients in the the personal care industry but the US only 60. The EU bans over 1400 questionable ingredients in personal care and beauty products? Many ingredients in the products we use are... linked to skin cancer, infertility, hormone disruption. WHY DO I CARE? I didn’t know what I didn’t know! As I was applying my personal care products, makeup and sunscreen, I never thought for a second they might not be safe. About 4 years ago, my brother, who worked for the Canadian Cancer Society, informed me I was high risk for skin cancer because of my pale skin and because I was burned as a teenager in the sun. We didn’t wear sunscreen back then. We applied oil to get a tan and lemon juice on our hair to lighten it! In addition, my mom had skin cancer. The stats show I was in the high risk category and needed to be careful. At the same time I had a painful flare up on my eyelids and face. I couldn’t wear eyeshadow or eyeliner anymore. I was learning that non toxic skincare and beauty products may clear up this breakout. Thus, began my clean beauty journey! I recognize some people do not care about safer ingredients and that is totally okay. But for me it does matter and I believe it is part of the reason my skin is in the condition it is in today! And so far no skin cancer has emerged. I realize it is just as important what goes ON our skin as what we put in it with the foods we eat. Thankfully there are now many companies out there other than Beauty counter creating products without harmful ingredients. But recent allergy patch... tests from my dermatologist may be the missing link to finally give me some relief.
