Make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if a fire occurs. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with all members of the household and make sure someone helps young children, older adults or anyone else that may need assistance to evacuate. Once outside, stay outside and call your local fire department from a neighbor's house. Thank You Wayne Koostachin, Fire Chief

Chimney Tips to Keep Your Family WarmAnd Safe Fall chimney maintenance and proper cleaning are key steps to keeping your family safe and warm as the temperatures drop. Neglected chimneys accumulate creosote, a combustible byproduct of charred wood, along their walls. Add to that a high internal flue temperature and you've got a potentially dangerous chimney fire on your hands,Where there's fire, there's smoke and when it's in your fireplace, you'll eventually have a chimne...y that needs a clean sweep. Chimney fires occur when creosote, a highly combustible residue created by burning wood, ignites. The resulting flames are hotter than the wood in your fireplace and the hot sparks that burst from the chimney could set your home on fire. TOP 6 SAFETY TIPS Never burn garbage or painted/treated wood, only dry fire wood. Open damper fully before lighting a fire. Keep the fire to the back of the fireplace. Always use a spark screen or glass doors. Follow the manufacturers instructions when burning artificial logs. before cold weather arrives request an inspection to the Fire Department.. Smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers can save lives and property when you have them and they are working properly. BBQ Safety Tips: All barbeque grills must only be used outdoors using grills indoors or in enclosed spaces is not only a fire hazard, but it exposes occupants to toxic gasses and potential asphyxiation. Always position the grill well away from combustible objects buildings, fences, deck railings and landscaping can easily and quickly ignite.... Get your grill cleaned and serviced. Check all propane tanks and lines for leaks and damage. Never leave a lit grill unattended. Always use long handled grilling utensils and heat resistant oven mitts to avoid exposure burns from heat and flames. Periodically remove grease build-up in catch trays to prevent it from igniting. Keep a garden hose nearby, connected and ready for use in case of a fire. The Fire Department wants to ensure you have an enjoyable and safe summer. Thank you Fire Chief W

In today's #FireSmart tip we look at things you can do in the area immediately around your home to help reduce the danger from #Grassfire Do you have a cleared zone around your house and buildings? The first 10 metres of space around your home is your First Priority. It’s the most critical area to consider for fire protection. Remove any shrubs, trees, deadfall or woodpiles from this area and keep your grass mowed and watered.... Thank you Wayne Koostchin Fire Chief

Kashechewan Fire Services would like to remind residents of the danger grass fires can cause. The warm weather increases the potential for grass fires to occur in open fields, wooded areas and pathways covered with dead and dry vegetation. Fighting grass fires is challenging because there is difficulty getting water to the area, which hinders extinguishing efforts. Wind can also play a large factor in the spread of a grass fire and could end up endangering neighbouring struct...ures. Residents are asked to pay attention to their surroundings and be cautious when discarding cigarette butts and matches outside. Parents should also ensure matches and lighters are kept in areas not accessible to children. Lighting a grass fire intentionally could result in a charge of arson. Thank you. Wayne Koostachin Fire Chief

Yesterday evening, the firefighters had a tour on the new school for the elementary. Recognizing all rooms and spaces, the school is amazing and we’re happy for the children. We do these tours for whenever a building like this are constructed so we would wanna keep in mind of what it looks like inside and the safety that comes along with it. Meegwetch!
